PTO: Our next PTO meeting will be on Wednesday, February 12th at 6pm in Room 10 at JGW.

-The PTO is seeking donations for their upcoming calendar raffle. The success of this fundraiser is made possible by the donations from local businesses and families that support JG Whittier. If you have access to an item that you would like to donate, we would sincerely appreciate your generosity. All donations made are a tax deduction for you or your business, and it’s a great way to promote your local business to local families. Below are some examples of donations we have received in the past.

SITE COUNCIL: Our next Site Council Meeting will be on Wednesday, 2/12 from 5-6pm.
GUIDANCE NEWS: 

The school counselor, Mrs. Vlahos, is currently working with 8th grade students to prepare them for their transition to high school.  Throughout the month of January, Mrs. Vlahos will be visiting 8th grade tech classes to go over interview skills and provide students with practice interview questions that they can use to prepare for high school interviews and job interviews in the future.
        Important Dates & Deadlines:
  • Whittier Tech Interviews are scheduled for Wednesday February 5, 2020 and Thursday February 6, 2020 for any 8th grade applicant.  Applicants will be notified of their interview date and time.
  • Essex Tech interviews are scheduled for Thursday March 12, 2020 for any 8th grade applicant. Applicants will be notified of their interview time.
  • HHS Classical Academy application is attached for any 8th grade student interested in applying.  The deadline for Classical applications is Monday January 27, 2020. Classical Application 2019_2020 (1)
  • HHS CTE (Career Technical Education) Program application is also attached for any 8th grade student interested in applying.  The deadline for the CTE applications is Friday February 7, 2020. CTEApplication-ENG

The “Hillie For A Day” initiative allows prospective 8th grade students spend the day at Haverhill High School and see, first hand, the exciting programs and opportunities they have to offer.  It also gives students the opportunity to meet and connect with faculty, staff and students at HHS.  Parents/guardians can register their child to shadow at HHS by completing the online registration form by accessing this link:  https://forms.gle/gqWRhwGpvTfu3t5P6.  Students can also obtain a shadow request form from Mrs. Vlahos in Guidance.

At the end of this month and throughout the month of February, Mrs. Vlahos will conduct brief check-ins with sixth grade students.  The goal of these check-ins is to collect data on how the students feel things are going for themselves at this point in the school year.  These check-ins will happen during students’ technology period.  Mrs. Vlahos looks forward to this work with the students across sixth grade!
ACADEMIC/CLASSROOM NEWS: 
MCAS: As mentioned in last weeks update, our Instructional Leadership Team along with grade level teams are looking at ways of intervening with our students to help each student be as successful as possible. Things that you can do at home to help support this is to make sure students are consistently coming to school each day. Another strategy is to make sure that your student is getting between 8-10 hours of sleep per night. We will try to put out different strategies weekly in order for you to continue to support your students success from home.
GRADE 6: The district has partnered with HP3 (Haverhill Public-Private Partnership) to provide our 6th grade students with career readiness education and skills so that eventually, every public school student in Haverhill will be able to achieve a living wage job. The grade 6 students will be attending a career fair event on Tuesday, 1/21 from 9:30-11:00am.
That evening there will be a parent engagement dinner for all 6th grade parents from 6-7pm.
Attached is the notice that went home with students Thursday about this exciting opportunity sixth graders will experience. Many of the 6th grade teachers will also be at the dinner as well.
SPELLING BEE: The all-school spelling bee was held on Monday, January 13th. In first place was Tatiana Nunez from sixth grade!  In second and third places from seventh grade were Jack Peterson and Jacob Khedekar! Congratulations to all of the students who participated! Tatiana will take a written spelling test on February 28th. She must place among the top 50 regional spellers who also take the test. From there, it is off to Lynn Memorial City Hall in March for the regional bee. We will keep you posted! Good luck, Tatiana!
SPORTS NEWS:
BOY’S BASKETBALL: The boys will have practice on Wednesday and Friday this week from 3-5pm after school. Thanks to their dramatic victory over Nettle this past week, they have received a first round bye in the city tournament. They will face off against Consentino in the semi-finals on Thursday, January 30th at 6:30pm at HHS. Tickets will be $2 for students and $3 for adults.
GIRL’S BASKETBALL: The Girl’s basketball team will have practice on Tuesday, January 21st from 3-5pm after school. They will play a qualifying game before the playoffs against Consentino. They take on the Chargers at JGW on Thursday, January 23rd after school.
CHEERLEADING: The cheerleaders will have practice on Tuesday and Wednesday after school from 3-5pm this week.
VOLLEYBALL: On Thursday, January 23rd there will be meetings for students grades 6-8 who are interested in playing volleyball this year.  The meetings will take place during their grade’s recess time.  The grade 6 meeting will be held in Room 9 and the Grade 7 and 8 meetings will be held in Room 16.  Please see Mr. Harris or Mr. Taylor with any questions.
CLUB NEWS: 
ACADEMIC BOWL- There will be academic bowl practice for both the junior and senior team on Tuesday and Thursday after school from 2:45-3:45pm.
POETRY CLUB– There will be a Poetry Club meeting on Friday, 1/24, at 12:30 PM in room 15. This is for grades 7 & 8 and new members are always welcome. Students will be writing Valentine poetry for the residents at the Wingate rehab and long-term care facility.
YEARBOOK- There will be a yearbook meeting after school on Wednesday in Room 19 until 3:30.
MUSCIAL– Auditions for this year’s musical, “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory JR.” will be the week of Feb. 3 – 7. Please see Mr. K or Mr. Gariepy for details.
OTHER INFO: 
THE KINDNESS PROJECT: The Kindness Project is a proactive and positive initiative that improves school culture organized by a group of 8th grade students.
 Overview of the group structure:
  • Acts of kindness will be fulfilled the week of February 10th – 14th.
  • Each day of the week has a theme accompanied by a craft or treat that will be representative of the theme. Please see below:
  • Monday : Friendship  – Fifth grade students will receive a friendship bracelet that they  will be encouraged to give away or hang on to as a keepsake.
  • Tuesday : Rock on with Kindness – Sixth grade students will each receive a hand-painted  rock with artwork and words of encouragement.
  • Wednesday: Warm it up Wednesday – Seventh graders will receive a cup of Hot Chocolate out at recess.
  • Thursday : Quench your Spirit – Eighth graders will receive a bottle of water with a hand crafted label including inspirational quotes.
  • Friday : Roses of Respect , A Cup of Joe, and a Donut to Go!  – Every staff member will receive a cup of coffee, a donut, and a handmade origami rose.
The school is in need of donations for this project. Please see below for a list of items needed:
  1. Donuts and coffee to hand out to teachers on Friday, 2/14
  2. Cases of water: Appx: 150 (16.9 fl. oz) bottles
  3. Rocks to paint on.
  4. Gallon cans of paint:  Any colors
COMMUNICATION: Please remember that you can reach out to your student’s teachers whenever you want an update, or have questions or concerns. It is our policy that teachers will respond to any email communication within 24 hours. If you do not hear back from staff within that time, please contact the main office. We also encourage you to utilize the student portal.

 

COLD WEATHER: The snow, ice, and wind is here, and it will be cold from now until spring (this past weekend excluded!). With that being said, we kindly ask that you send your students to school prepared with jackets, hats, and gloves. We will make every attempt to take the students outside for recess each day if possible. This includes if there is snow on the ground and if it is cold. It is important that all students are prepared to bundle up. The rules with the snow are that students are not allowed to pick up and throw/kick snow at each other. Students are also not allowed to climb on snow piles and are encouraged to stay off of any ice in order to prevent injury. It would be greatly appreciated if parents reviewed these rules with their students. In the case that there is indoor recess due to the cold/weather, all students are to remain in their homerooms for the duration of their recess period.

 

ATTENDANCE: The first step to being successful in school is to show up to school daily! With the weather becoming cold and snowy, we recognize that it is more difficult to get out of bed and to school daily on time. It is imperative that students are still doing so. If you are having difficulty getting your student to school daily on time, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mr. Betty, Mrs. Vlahos, or Mrs. Midolo for support. Attendance letters will be mailed home to students who have missed 4-6 days as a reminder of the importance of being in school consistently. If a student misses 7 or more school days, a letter will be mailed to set up an attendance meeting with the school to discuss what support is needed and a plan for success moving forward. Please make every attempt to send your student to school each day, and if they do need to be out of school due to illness, please make sure doctor’s notes are shared with our main office. Thank you!

NOTICIAS DE ORIENTACIÓN:

La consejera escolar, la Sra. Vlahos, actualmente está trabajando con estudiantes de 8º grado para prepararlos para su transición a la escuela secundaria. A lo largo del mes de enero, la Sra. Vlahos visitará las clases de tecnología de octavo grado para repasar las habilidades de entrevista y proporcionar a los estudiantes preguntas de entrevistas de práctica que pueden usar para prepararse para entrevistas en la escuela secundaria y entrevistas de trabajo en el futuro.

Fechas importantes y plazos:

  • Las entrevistas tecnológicas de Whittier están programadas para Miércoles 5 de febrero de 2020 y Jueves 6 de febrero de 2020 para cualquier solicitante de octavo grado. Los solicitantes serán notificados de la fecha y hora de su entrevista.
  • Las entrevistas de Essex Tech están programadas para Jueves 12 de marzo de 2020 para cualquier solicitante de octavo grado. Los solicitantes serán notificados de su tiempo de entrevista.
  • La solicitud de la Academia Clásica de HHS se adjunta para cualquier estudiante de octavo grado interesado en postularse. La fecha límite para las aplicaciones clásicas es Lunes 27 de enero de 2020 . Aplicación clásica 2019_2020 (1)

La iniciativa “Hillie For A Day” permite que los futuros estudiantes de 8º grado pasen el día en la Haverhill High School y vean de primera mano los emocionantes programas y oportunidades que tienen para ofrecer. También les brinda a los estudiantes la oportunidad de conocer y conectarse con el profesorado, el personal y los estudiantes de HHS. Los padres / tutores pueden registrar a su hijo en la sombra en HHS completando el formulario de registro en línea accediendo a este enlace: https://forms.gle/gqWRhwGpvTfu3t5P6 . Los estudiantes también pueden obtener un formulario de solicitud sombra de la Sra. Vlahos en Orientación.

A finales de este mes y durante todo el mes de febrero, la Sra. Vlahos llevará a cabo breves controles con estudiantes de sexto grado. El objetivo de estos registros es recopilar datos sobre cómo los estudiantes sienten que las cosas van por sí mismos en este momento del año escolar. Estos registros se realizarán durante el período de tecnología de los estudiantes. ¡La Sra. Vlahos espera con ansias este trabajo con los estudiantes de sexto grado!

 

NOTICIAS ACADÉMICAS / EN EL AULA:

 

MCAS: Como se mencionó en la actualización de las últimas semanas, nuestro Equipo de Liderazgo Educativo junto con los equipos de nivel de grado están buscando formas de intervenir con nuestros estudiantes para ayudar a cada estudiante a tener el mayor éxito posible. Lo que puede hacer en casa para ayudar a apoyar esto es asegurarse de que los estudiantes asistan a la escuela todos los días. Otra estrategia es asegurarse de que su estudiante duerma entre 8 y 10 horas por noche. Intentaremos presentar diferentes estrategias semanalmente para que pueda continuar apoyando el éxito de sus estudiantes desde casa.

 

GRADO 6: El distrito se ha asociado con HP3 (Haverhill Public-Private Partnership) para proporcionar a nuestros estudiantes de sexto grado educación y habilidades de preparación profesional para que eventualmente, todos los estudiantes de escuelas públicas en Haverhill puedan lograr un trabajo con un salario digno. Los estudiantes de sexto grado asistirán a un evento de feria profesional el martes, 1/21 de 9: 30-11: 00am.

Esa noche habrá una cena de compromiso de padres para todos los padres de sexto grado de 6-7pm.

Se adjunta el aviso que se fue a casa con los estudiantes el jueves sobre esta emocionante oportunidad que experimentarán los alumnos de sexto grado. Muchos de los maestros de sexto grado también estarán en la cena.

CONCURSO DE ORTOGRAFÍA: El concurso de ortografía para toda la escuela se llevó a cabo el lunes 13 de enero. En primer lugar fue Tatiana Núñez de sexto grado! ¡En segundo y tercer lugar del séptimo grado estaban Jack Peterson y Jacob Khedekar! ¡Felicitaciones a todos los estudiantes que participaron! Tatiana tomará una prueba de ortografía escrita el 28 de febrero. Debe ubicarse entre los 50 mejores escritores regionales que también toman el examen. Desde allí, se marcha al Ayuntamiento de Lynn Memorial en marzo para la abeja regional. ¡Los mantendremos informados! ¡Buena suerte, Tatiana!

 

NOTICIAS DEPORTIVAS: 

 

BALONCESTO DE NIÑO: Los niños tendrán práctica los miércoles y viernes de esta semana de 3 a 5 p. M. Después de la escuela. Gracias a su dramática victoria sobre Nettle la semana pasada, han recibido un adiós de primera ronda en el torneo de la ciudad. Se enfrentarán a Consentino en las semifinales el jueves 30 de enero a las 6:30 pm en HHS. Los boletos serán de $ 2 para estudiantes y $ 3 para adultos.

 

BALONCESTO DE NIÑA: El equipo de baloncesto de Girl’s practicará el martes 21 de enero de 3 a 5 p.m. después de la escuela. Jugarán un juego de clasificación antes de los playoffs contra Consentino. Se enfrentan a los Chargers en JGW el jueves 23 de enero después de la escuela.

 

ANIMADORAS: Las animadoras tendrán práctica los martes y miércoles después de clases de 3-5pm esta semana.

 

VÓLEIBOL: El jueves 23 de enero habrá reuniones para estudiantes de grados 6-8 que estén interesados en jugar voleibol este año. Las reuniones se llevarán a cabo durante el recreo de su grado. La reunión de grado 6 se llevará a cabo en la sala 9 y las reuniones de grado 7 y 8 se llevarán a cabo en la sala 16. Consulte al Sr. Harris o al Sr. Taylor con cualquier pregunta.

 

NOTICIAS DEL CLUB:

 

CUENCO ACADÉMICO Habrá práctica académica de tazón para el equipo junior y senior los martes y jueves después de la escuela de 2: 45-3: 45pm.

 

CLUB DE POESÍA – Habrá una reunión del Poetry Club el viernes, 24 de enero, a las 12:30 PM en la sala 15. Esto es para los grados 7 y 8 y los nuevos miembros siempre son bienvenidos. Los estudiantes escribirán poesía de San Valentín para los residentes en el centro de rehabilitación a largo plazo de Wingate.

 

ANUARIO- Habrá una reunión de anuario después de la escuela el miércoles en el salón 19 hasta las 3:30.

 

Musica – Las audiciones para el musical de este año, “Willie Wonka y la fábrica de chocolate JR” serán la semana del 3 al 7 de febrero. Consulte al Sr. K o al Sr. Gariepy para obtener más detalles.

 

OTRA INFORMACIÓN:

 

EL PROYECTO DE AMABILIDAD: El Proyecto Kindness es una iniciativa proactiva y positiva que mejora la cultura escolar organizada por un grupo de estudiantes de octavo grado.

 

Descripción general de la estructura del grupo:

  • Los actos de bondad se cumplirán la semana del 10 al 14 de febrero.
  • Cada día de la semana tiene un tema acompañado de una artesanía o regalo que será representativo del tema. Por favor ver más abajo:
  • Lunes: Amistad – Los estudiantes de quinto grado recibirán un brazalete de amistad que se les animará a regalar o guardar como recuerdo.
  • Martes: rockea con amabilidad: los estudiantes de sexto grado recibirán una roca pintada a mano con obras de arte y palabras de aliento.
  • Miércoles: Caliéntalo el miércoles: los alumnos de séptimo grado recibirán una taza de chocolate caliente en el recreo.
  • Jueves: Apaga tu espíritu: los alumnos de octavo grado recibirán una botella de agua con una etiqueta hecha a mano que incluye citas inspiradoras.
  • Viernes: ¡Rosas de respeto, una taza de Joe y un donut para llevar! – Cada miembro del personal recibirá una taza de café, una rosquilla y una rosa de origami hecha a mano.

La escuela necesita donaciones para este proyecto. Vea a continuación una lista de artículos necesarios:

COMUNICACIÓN: Recuerde que puede comunicarse con los maestros de su estudiante cuando quiera una actualización o si tiene preguntas o inquietudes. Es nuestra política que los maestros respondan a cualquier comunicación por correo electrónico dentro de las 24 horas. Si no recibe respuesta del personal dentro de ese tiempo, comuníquese con la oficina principal. También lo alentamos a utilizar el portal del estudiante.

CLIMA FRÍO: La nieve, el hielo y el viento están aquí, y hará frío desde ahora hasta la primavera (¡excluido el fin de semana pasado!). Dicho esto, le pedimos amablemente que envíe a sus alumnos a la escuela preparados con chaquetas, sombreros y guantes. Haremos todo lo posible para llevar a los estudiantes al recreo todos los días si es posible. Esto incluye si hay nieve en el suelo y si hace frío. Es importante que todos los estudiantes estén preparados para abrigarse. Las reglas con la nieve son que los estudiantes no pueden recoger y lanzar / patear nieve entre ellos. Tampoco se les permite a los estudiantes trepar sobre montones de nieve y se les recomienda mantenerse alejados de cualquier hielo para evitar lesiones. Sería muy apreciado si los padres revisaran estas reglas con sus estudiantes. En el caso de que haya un receso en el interior debido al frío / clima, todos los estudiantes deben permanecer en sus salones durante el período de recreo.

ASISTENCIA: ¡El primer paso para tener éxito en la escuela es presentarse a la escuela todos los días! Con el clima frío y nevoso, reconocemos que es más difícil levantarse de la cama y ir a la escuela todos los días a tiempo. Es imperativo que los estudiantes sigan haciéndolo. Si tiene dificultades para llevar a su estudiante a la escuela todos los días a tiempo, no dude en comunicarse con el Sr. Betty, la Sra. Vlahos o la Sra. Midolo para obtener ayuda. Las cartas de asistencia se enviarán por correo a los estudiantes que hayan faltado de 4 a 6 días como recordatorio de la importancia de estar en la escuela constantemente. Si un estudiante pierde 7 o más días escolares, se enviará una carta por correo para programar una reunión de asistencia con la escuela para discutir qué apoyo se necesita y un plan para el éxito en el futuro. Haga todo lo posible para enviar a su hijo a la escuela todos los días, y si necesita estar fuera de la escuela debido a una enfermedad, asegúrese de compartir las notas del médico con nuestra oficina principal. ¡Gracias!
