Middle schoolers invited to join band

jgw_trumpetDean Tsiriopoulos (in photo at left), a veteran music teacher in the Haverhill Public Schools and now the district’s middle school band director, is on a mission.

Tsiriopoulos is spreading the word about band music to fifth- and sixth-graders this month, hoping to find some budding musicians who will start early to enjoy and appreciate band music, and make the Haverhill Schools’ band as strong as possible.

He recently visited J.G. Whittier and Dr. Paul C. Nettle middle schools and, with band members from each of the schools, put on a demonstration for fifth- and sixth-graders that included short performances by students and question-and-answer sessions.

Tsiriopoulos told the middle schoolers that the band is like a family, where more experienced players will help the novices along.

Students interested in joining the band were asked to identify their first- and second-place choice of instruments, which they will pick up next week.

Once-weekly lessons and at-home practice will prepare the students to perform with the Middle/High School Band at parades, high school graduation and football games, Tsiriopoulos told the students

    Sign-up sheets are now due.
