ACADEMIC NEWS:
COMMUNICATION: Please remember that you can reach out to your student’s teachers whenever you want an update, or have questions or concerns. It is our policy that teachers will respond to any email communication within 24 hours. If you do not hear back from staff within that time, please contact the main office. We also encourage you to utilize the student portal. We as a staff continue to make necessary changes to make sure that we are sharing as much as possible with all families through our student portal.
MCAS: As we creep closer and closer to MCAS season, our school staff continues to look at ways of intervening with our students to help each student be as successful as possible. Starting this week we will be implementing specific interventions to help students move forward and get prepared for the MCAS. Things that you can do at home to help support your student(s) be successful is to make sure they are consistently coming to school each day. Another strategy is to make sure that your student is getting between 8-10 hours of sleep per night. Making sure that your student has a healthy, well balanced breakfast is another strategy for success. We will try to put out different strategies weekly in order for you to continue to support your students success from home.
SPORTS NEWS:
VOLLEYBALL: Tryouts for the girls and boys volleyball teams are this week! Girls tryouts are scheduled for Tuesday, February 4th and Thursday, February 6th. Boys tryouts are scheduled for Wednesday, February 5th and Friday, February 7th. If your student has not tried out for or played a sport for JGW this school year, he/she must get a Participation Packet from Mr. Harris or Mr. Taylor filled out and returned prior to tryouts.
BASKETBALL: We would like to congratulate both our boy’s and girl’s basketball team for their hard work this season. Both teams reached the semi-finals of the city tournament before having their seasons end. We are proud of your commitment and dedication to your teams! Also, a special thanks to our cheerleading team who was always there to support both teams!!
CLUB NEWS:
ACADEMIC BOWL: There will be academic bowl practice for both the junior and senior team on Tuesday and Thursday after school from 2:45-3:45pm.
MUSCIAL: Auditions for this year’s musical, “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory JR.” will be this week. Please see Mr. K or Mr. Gariepy for details.

NURSING OFFICE UPDATE:
We are officially in the height of flu season. Massachusetts is listed as having “high” influenza activity currently by CDC, and this increase in flu activity is evident in our schools, both in staff and student absences. We wanted to remind you of a few things:
Getting a flu vaccine every year is the best way to protect yourself and your family from flu and its potentially serious complications. CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated by the end of October.
What is new this flu season?
- Flu vaccines have been updated to better match circulating flu viruses
- Any licensed, age-appropriate flu vaccines are recommended
- The nasal spray flu vaccine (LAIV) is again a vaccine option. Ask your health care provider about what vaccine is right for you

Fight the flu this season by getting your flu vaccine and encouraging others to protect themselves and their loved ones by doing the same.
Should your child be diagnosed with the flu- follow doctor recommendations about keeping them home. As a reminder, Haverhill Public Schools has the following school exclusion policies
Students will be sent home by the school nurse with the following:

- Fever (elevated temperature of 100.5 or higher) upon arrival or during school hours. Must remain home until fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicines such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil)
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea, with 2 or more episodes within the previous 24 hours or during the school day. Once dismissed, the student may not return to school until there has been no vomiting and/or diarrhea for 24 hours.
- Rash of unknown origin, particularly those accompanied by fever or behavior change suggestive of infectious disease. Must be evaluated by a doctor and note sent for re-entry into school.
- Live head lice. Must be treated at home, and then re-checked by the school nurse, preferably with parent/guardian present, upon return to school
- Irritability, lethargy, persistent crying, difficulty breathing, or other signs of severe illness
If a child is sent home from school by the school nurse, he/she is not allowed to return to school the following day, as most symptoms require at least 24 hours to resolve.
Strep throat or other diagnosed infections must be treated with antibiotics for at least 24 hours prior to returning to school.

- Acts of kindness will be fulfilled the week of February 10th – 14th.
- Each day of the week has a theme accompanied by a craft or treat that will be representative of the theme. Please see below:
- Monday : Friendship – Fifth grade students will receive a friendship bracelet that they will be encouraged to give away or hang on to as a keepsake.
- Tuesday : Rock on with Kindness – Sixth grade students will each receive a hand-painted rock with artwork and words of encouragement.
- Wednesday: Warm it up Wednesday – Seventh graders will receive a cup of Hot Chocolate out at recess.
- Thursday : Quench your Spirit – Eighth graders will receive a bottle of water with a hand crafted label including inspirational quotes.
- Friday : Roses of Respect , A Cup of Joe, and a Donut to Go! – Every staff member will receive a cup of coffee, a donut, and a handmade origami rose.
- Donuts and coffee to hand out to teachers on Friday, 2/14
- Cases of water: Appx: 150 (16.9 fl. oz) bottles
- Rocks to paint on.
- Gallon cans of paint: Any colors
GUIDANCE NEWS:
- Whittier Tech Interviews are scheduled for Wednesday February 5, 2020 and Thursday February 6, 2020 for any 8th grade applicant. Applicants will be notified of their interview date and time.
- Essex Tech interviews are scheduled for Thursday March 12, 2020 for any 8th grade applicant. Applicants will be notified of their interview time.
- HHS CTE (Career Technical Education) Program application is also attached for any 8th grade student interested in applying. The deadline for the CTE applications is Friday February 7, 2020. CTEApplication-ENG
The “Hillie For A Day” initiative allows prospective 8th grade students spend the day at Haverhill High School and see, first hand, the exciting programs and opportunities they have to offer. It also gives students the opportunity to meet and connect with faculty, staff and students at HHS. Parents/guardians can register their child to shadow at HHS by completing the online registration form by accessing this link: https://forms.gle/gqWRhwGpvTfu3t5P6. Students can also obtain a shadow request form from Mrs. Vlahos in Guidance.
Throughout the month of February, Mrs. Vlahos will conduct brief check-ins with sixth grade students. The goal of these check-ins is to collect data on how the students feel things are going for themselves at this point in the school year. These check-ins will happen during students’ technology period. Mrs. Vlahos looks forward to this work with the students across sixth grade!
ATTENDANCE: The first step to being successful in school is to show up to school daily! With the weather becoming cold and snowy, we recognize that it is more difficult to get out of bed and to school daily on time. It is imperative that students are still doing so. If you are having difficulty getting your student to school daily on time, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mr. Betty, Mrs. Vlahos, or Mrs. Midolo for support. Attendance letters will be mailed home to students who have missed 4-6 days as a reminder of the importance of being in school consistently. If a student misses 7 or more school days, a letter will be mailed to set up an attendance meeting with the school to discuss what support is needed and a plan for success moving forward. Please make every attempt to send your student to school each day, and if they do need to be out of school due to illness, please make sure doctor’s notes are shared with our main office. Thank you!

VÓLEIBOL: ¡Las pruebas para los equipos de voleibol de niñas y niños son esta semana! Las pruebas para niñas están programadas para el martes 4 de febrero y el jueves 6 de febrero. Las pruebas para niños están programadas para el miércoles 5 de febrero y el viernes 7 de febrero. Si su estudiante no ha probado o jugado un deporte para JGW este año escolar, él / ella debe obtener un Paquete de participación del Sr. Harris o el Sr. Taylor completado y devuelto antes de las pruebas.
BALONCESTO: Nos gustaría felicitar a nuestro equipo de baloncesto de niños y niñas por su arduo trabajo esta temporada. ACTUALIZACIÓN DE LA OFICINA DE ENFERMERÍA:
Estamos oficialmente en el apogeo de la temporada de gripe. En la actualidad, los CDC tienen una actividad de influenza “alta” en Massachusetts, y este aumento en la actividad de la gripe es evidente en nuestras escuelas, tanto en ausencias de personal como de estudiantes. Queremos recordarle algunas cosas:
Vacunarse contra la gripe todos los años es la mejor manera de protegerse y proteger a su familia de la gripe y sus complicaciones potencialmente graves. Los CDC recomiendan que todas las personas de 6 meses en adelante se vacunen a fines de octubre.

EL PROYECTO DE AMABILIDAD: El Proyecto Kindness es una iniciativa proactiva y positiva que mejora la cultura escolar organizada por un grupo de estudiantes de octavo grado.
Descripción general de la estructura del grupo:
- Los actos de bondad se cumplirán la semana del 10 al 14 de febrero.
- Cada día de la semana tiene un tema acompañado de una artesanía o regalo que será representativo del tema. Por favor ver más abajo:
- Lunes: Amistad – Los estudiantes de quinto grado recibirán un brazalete de amistad que se les animará a regalar o guardar como recuerdo.
- Martes: rockea con amabilidad: los estudiantes de sexto grado recibirán una roca pintada a mano con obras de arte y palabras de aliento.
- Miércoles: Caliéntalo el miércoles: los alumnos de séptimo grado recibirán una taza de chocolate caliente en el recreo.
- Jueves: Apaga tu espíritu: los alumnos de octavo grado recibirán una botella de agua con una etiqueta hecha a mano que incluye citas inspiradoras.
