Weekly Update (4/20-4/24)

Hello JG Whittier Families!

We have made it….April Vacation week (that may be more for me than for all of you)!!!! I want to say thank you to everyone out there who has continued to have patience and perseverance as we have all tried to find some consistent structure throughout this new life we are living. Our staff continue to work very hard each day to provide our students with relevant and effective remote learning opportunities. Now that we are finishing week two of our new remote learning, teachers are continuing to see their participation rates rise, which is great!

It is important that ALL students are doing their absolute best to get their assignments done and submitted in a timely manner. Please continue to refer to the particular grade level schedules that were released a couple of weeks ago as a guide to help provide structure at home for when students should be working on each subject. Please note however, that we are all fully aware that each family is different, and we all have our own personal circumstances that may not allow our students to be working during those particular times, and that is okay. We just want to provide guides for assistance, but the important part is that the work get completed whenever is most convenient for you as a family.

Please continue to reach out to your student’s teachers with questions, and also encourage your student’s to participate in their teacher’s live google meets and office hours so that they can get the assistance that they need.

With April vacation upon us, we do still have updates/messages/and some work opportunities for your students over the break if you so choose. With that being said, please also try to take some time to take a break and relax as much as possible and enjoy the family time that you have.

Mr. Marinella: Hello everyone, please continue to check Google and your emails for updates. History is working on a Tuesday/Thursday schedule, and English is Monday/Wednesday/Friday. I am encouraging all students to be reading everyday and Orange English will be posting their notes on those days. Assignments are generally due on the Friday of that week, but if any more times is needed or any questions arise please just ask via email or comments. And Orange ELA, check on Classroom on Monday for info about Haverhill Promise Reading Challenge! Take a well deserved break next week, you have all been working hard and I am extremely proud of all of you!
Ms. Lees: Spring is a time of rebirth and inspiration.  I hope you all get a chance to be outside – walk, play or just sit somewhere you can see some fresh new flowers blooming and the bright green beginning of leaves on trees.  My yard will be happy to be taken care of next week.  Your teachers will be thinking of you and looking forward to seeing your faces on the return from break.  Remember to read, remember to learn something new every day and remember to be kind to yourself and your loved ones.
GRADE 6:
Ms. Rubera:

Thank you for working so hard at home!  I appreciate you all for doing your best to learn math and science during these challenging times.  All assignments with feedback have been posted on Schoolbrains. Please check the portal to see your child’s work completion and progress.

To communicate with families, I will continue to send out a weekly e-mail on Sunday night with an overview for the week.  The information in that e-mail is also included on my website/blog, jrubera.wordpress.com. You can subscribe to my website/blog to receive a notification every time I post, or you can e-mail me at jrubera@haverhill-ps.org so I can add you to the family contact list if you are not receiving weekly e-mails from me.  Parents/Guardians can also be invited to their children’s Google classrooms; if you would like to be added, please e-mail me and I will set that up. For fun ways to stay connected, follow me on instagram: @jrubera10, Twitter: @jrubera, or TikTok: @j.rubera.

I hope you are all well and staying safe!  Next week is vacation, so I will not be assigning work or conducting lessons.  However, if you’re looking for some enrichment or activities, please consider these:

  • The 50th anniversary of Earth Day (April 22, 2020) will be celebrated with the first Digital Earth Day.  The Earth Day network has planned 24 hours of actions you can take at home and on social media to promote environmental sustainability.

https://www.earthday.org/take-action-now/

  • Create your own math game!  The deadline to submit entries is June 30, 2020.

https://www.mindresearch.org/gameathon

  • HC Media (Channel 99) has educational videos prepared by our curriculum department  by grade level that students can watch to help them continue learning. Check them out!

Mr. Taylor: ELA  and Social Studies classes- If anyone is behind on their work, over vacation there will be no new assignments. Plenty of time to catch up on anything you may be behind on. Try to get 40 mins of Lexia in during the week. That is all you need to do. That, and stay safe and try to have some fun during the week. Hopefully, it’s nice out. Take care of yourselves and each other.
Ms. Delong: You should be using next week to complete any missing/late assignments in Science and Social Studies including the Ancient Civilization project. If you have completed your work, you should read and/or watch CNN10 daily. Students should also be writing in their COVID-19 journals.
Ms. Aylward: This week students wrote odes to ordinary objects – a great tribute while we are stuck at home and have no choice but to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. Students continued to read Holes and Percy Jackson. Next week, students should continue to read a little every day. The Haverhill Public Library is having a reading challenge the students can participate in at haverhillpromise.com to win prizes just for reading.
Ms. Sargent: The first session of work for Grade 6 Orange, Yellow and Red math was due Friday the 17.  Some students are hitting the turned in button, but are not attaching completed assignments with it.  It would probably be easier at this time if you are not sure how to send in the work to just send a picture of it to me via email.  My email is:  jsargent@haverhill-ps.org

I have also been meeting with students who are struggling with work and providing extra math instruction.  This can be done anytime through-out the week if you just shoot me an email as well.  The next set of assignments will go out April 27.
Ms. Guisti: Mrs. Guisti, Ms. Blanchette, and Ms. Cronin are continuing to have small group google meets as well as in-class subject support for students during google meets.  We have also been offering times that are more convenient for students besides the mornings to do extra help.  We are hoping that students will attend.  All google meets have been posted on google classrooms so please please attend.  If you ever need to schedule one to one time just email Mrs. Guisti at nancy.guisti@haverhill-ps.org and I will be sure to schedule individual time to support you.  Small group ELA please try your best to work on the assignments on google classroom and on readnaturally.readlive.com to practice reading fluency.  Hope everyone has a wonderful vacation week!
GRADE 7:
Ms. Marciano: Thank you all for working so hard over these past two weeks! I hope that you are able to find a book that interests you so that you can get some reading done over vacation. If you are able to read, there will be a link posted for the Haverhill Promise Reading Challenge on Google Classroom. Take a selfie with your book and share it with me through email or Instagram…you might have a chance to be featured on Haverhill Promise IG page or the HPS webpage. If finding a book is not possible, watch your favorite movie and try to write an alternate ending. I’m looking forward to catching up with everyone on Google Meets once vacation is over! Stay safe.
Ms. DiGloria: Assignments for Grade 7 Social Studies will continue to be posted on Google Classroom. There have been four assignments thus far, and I will continue to accept work and give feedback as students pass that work in. If you or your student have any questions, please reach out via email or post in Google Classroom and I will answer as promptly as I can.
Ms. MacKinnon: Hello 7th grade families, There is no new science work assigned over April vacation. I am going to leave up the natural hazards work for anyone that has not had a chance to do their science this past week hope everyone stays safe and healthy during vacation and I hope the weather is nice so you can get outside with your family.
Ms. Berthiaume:

Vacation Activity:  Take part in the Haverhill Promise City-Wide Reading Challenge! During April Vacation, participate in Week 6’s challenge. Go to https://www.haverhillpromise.com/reading-challenge for more information on tracking your reading (It’s easy!). Prizes will be awarded! Give it a try and good luck! Please send me your reading minutes, too!
Class Notes:  If you are unable to find your score and my feedback on the Newsela site, go to Binder>Your Progress where you will find the article. Click on it to see your score and my comments.  It’s a new app for me, so I’m learning, too!  See you in Google Classroom after vacation!
Mr. LeGrand: We had another wonderful week of remote learning.  We have been learning about integers and, how to use them to represent the velocity and speed of an object.  We will continue working on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers when we get back from April vacation.  Students are encouraged to complete any missing assignments and work on iReady during April vacation.   Do not hesitate to reach out if your child needs help completing their math assignments: wlegrand@haverhill-ps.org.
Ms. Trombly: Students are continuing to work on Google classroom. I have been setting up google meets with my kids. I’ve been sending out screen castify lessons for kids who are having trouble. I am using the Remind app and email and Google classroom for communication.
Ms. Bilmazes: It’s been great talking with some of you over the past week during the Google Meets! Keep doing your work and don’t be afraid to reach out for help! Hope you enjoy your vacation week. To keep up with your reading, check out the link below!https://www.haverhillpromise.com/reading-challenge

Ms. Senior: This week, Google Meets sessions between teachers and students produced great strides for those who requested help on a number of subjects and to discover what, if any, assignments they may be missing.  Google Classroom was instrumental in assisting students in “real time” work on Math integers/absolute value/MCAS prep and to students continuing to respond to our whole-class novel in ELA.  Students in my “fan club” are asked to please drop me an email as a check-in, even if you’ve recently written to me.  Thanks! msenior@haverhill-ps.org

GRADE 8:
Mr. Harris:

Blue & Purple Math – everything is posted in Google Classroom.  Students are not asked to complete every assignment for the week, but instead may pick and choose the assignments they complete, with a goal of completing 25 points worth of work.  Appetizer assignments are worth 2 points, Entree assignments are worth 5 points, and Dessert assignments are worth 10 points.  One entree and one dessert are posted to the iReady platform. If you would like to know how many assignments your student is completing, please check SchoolBrains as I will be updating that toward the end of the week.  Google hangout links are provided every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the google classrooms to have questions answered from 12-1.
Yellow & Orange Civics – assignments for the week will be posted on Mondays.  While there are no hard deadlines for Civics, it is strongly recommended that your student complete the given assignments each week so that he/she does not fall behind.  Most assignments will involve some sort of reading and writing piece.  Google hangout links are provided every Tuesday and Thursday in the google classrooms to have questions answered from 12-1.
Office hours are from 1-2 on Mondays, with the link being provided in all google classrooms.
There will be no new work for April Vacation week, but all students are strongly encouraged to make up any work that has not been completed.
Ms. Sullivan: Happy April Vacation!  I will not be assigning work this week, this can be used as a time to catch up on your assignments.  All of the work is posted in google classroom and I am accepting all late work.  Enjoy your week and stay safe and healthy.
Ms. Deblasis:

Lesson 10 Assessment due Friday 4/17.  Assessment is on Google Classroom.  Please email me your work when completed.

Mr. Blaustein:

Reading & ELA Blue and Yellow
I have posted the Haverhill Reading promise link for my groups and I would love for you to get involved. One of the best things you can do now is to read and  expand your consciousness! So I encourage you all to participate.
Last week I posted a pdf of The Outsiders novel. I also assigned the reading comprehension questions for chapters 1-3. There is a chart that follows . You need to print it or make your own. The pdf won’t let you write in it. The chart is ongoing and will be turned in later in the novel. There are two other assignments there as well. Students may work at their own pace, but they need to show they are actively engaged.I did try to contact all my students in Blue and Yellow; I will post new assignments the week following vacation. I will hold a Google meet on Wednesday 4/22 at 11:00-12:00. I look forward to seeing you there.
Civics Red & Purple
I spent time Wednesday and Thursday call ing all my Civics students, so I apologize if I missed you this week. All your assignments are  available in the McGraw-Hill cue. If you are having problems accessing them, please let me know as soon as possible. I will have a Google meet after vacation on Tuesday, April 24th from 12: 00-1:00 to answer any and all questions. I look forward to seeing you all there.
Ms. Brown: Hello, I hope this all finds you well. Please continue to feel free to email me at kbrown1@haverhill-ps.org. For those that I have spoken to regarding Covid 19 plans, thank you.  As always, if you would like to receive a phone call, please email me, and we can easily set up a time to talk. Office hours will be on Wednesday from 1-2. I will also be checking in weekly, on a last name, alphabetical rotation basis, with parents and students.  In addition, I am offering Special Education Students, as well as any other student, that may be struggling with ELA, access to, and the direct monitoring of, The Lexia “Power Up and Rapid” language based reading program, which is geared toward older middle school students. This can be accepted as class credit for ELA, and might be easier for you to manage.  I will be reaching out to some of you, who have not been able to participate in ELA, and hope that this may be an option. Last, if you are struggling in any way, please get in touch with anyone at J.G. Whittier, that you may be comfortable with. It is all manageable and doable. Together, we can make this work. Happy April vacation to you all.  Stay safe and be well.
Ms. Kaiser: Greetings JGW families! Thanks to your support from home, students are adjusting to the remote learning model. They are displaying a sense of cooperation when they tackle the tasks of organizing their daily schedules and managing their time. And as they communicate with their teachers via Google Classroom, they are also connecting with their fellow students. With a spirit of camaraderie, they are providing support to each other; it’s clear that they are going to get through this together! I hope that the upcoming break provides students a period of respite with family, and allows time to enjoy journaling or reading for interest. They may want to consider the Haverhill Promise Reading Challenge. https://www.haverhillpromise.com/reading-challenge

Mr. Gariepy’s Google Classroom is in full swing!! This week we learned the basics of guitar and drama in 5th grade, as well as music composition (song writing) in the remaining grades!
The differences in what we’re all learning in music class right now are due to the fact that this is Mr. G’s first year with grade 5 and his second year with everyone else.  The topics that he is covering with grade 5 right now are things that everyone else already learned last year. So please make sure your child is doing the work that they are supposed to be doing!
You can find a treasure trove of resources at whittiermiddlemusic.webs.com

Art (Ms. Boulger): All new assignments on Google Classroom involve little to no art materials to complete. This is considering we all need to stay safe at home and no one will need to buy supplies to participate in art.  Extra credit assignments are also available for students that want to do art over vacation.
