HAVERHILL PUBLIC SCHOOLS HANDBOOK (K-8): Please click on the link below to be connected to our up to date handbook for grades K-8: https://www.haverhill-ps.org/hps-student-handbook/

MASKS: As we continue to adhere to the Massachusetts’s State Mandate that all people (students, staff, visitors) are required to wear a mask in the school building, we ask that you please send your students to school with a spare mask. Many students have been breaking their masks and need new ones throughout the school day. We would appreciate families sending students with an extra mask each day. Thank you!

LOST & FOUND: Our lost & found is full of clothing. If your student is missing anything, please have them take a look! If students do not claim their belongings by Friday, February 4th, we will be recycling/redistributing this clothing based on need through our nurses office.

Chromebooks: PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR STUDENT IS COMING TO SCHOOL DAILY WITH THEIR CHROMEBOOKS FULLY CHARGED. THANK YOU!!

 JGW Chromebook Policy

We understand that “things happen” and from time-to-time students will forget to charge their Chromebook or leave it at home.  Unfortunately, this is becoming a habit for some students and is happening far too often overall.  Students were made aware at the beginning of the school year that the expectation is for ALL students to bring their fully-charged Chromebook to school each day.

The supply of extra Chromebooks is limited.  Because of this, we are implementing a borrowing policy here at JGW for Chromebooks and chargers.  Students who forget their Chromebooks, bring them to school uncharged, or do not return a borrowed Chromebook the same day will be given consequences as follows:

First Offense: Student will be issued a warning

Second Offense: Parents/Guardians will be called

Third Offense or More:  Student will be given after-school detention

**These consequences will reset for all students each trimester.

If a student loses or damages a Chromebook or charger and  the student needs to be issued another device, the family will be charged a fee for the replacement.  Typically, the Chromebook replacement fee will be $199.00 and the charger replacement fee will be $39.00.

It is very important for students to come to school with charged and functioning Chromebooks.  The devices are used in most, if not all classes; including music and art.  We are asking families to be partners with the JGW in this, and remind your children to charge their Chromebooks and bring them to school every day.

Attendance: A reminder to all families that if your student will be absent for the day, please make sure to call the main office (978-374-5782) to notify the school. Thank you.

Dress Code: Please be aware that students are not allowed to wear pajamas or pajama pants to school. We receive many questions about our school’s dress code. We would ask that all families please review the Haverhill Public Schools Dress Code Policy with their students in order to ensure that it is properly being followed. Thank you for your attention to this. Please find a copy of the HPS Dress Code Policy below: Dress Code Policy (HPS)

CLASSROOM NEWS:

GRADE 5:

Ms. Simes: This week in math, students will estimate sums and differences of fractions using the half or whole number, find common denominators for fractions with unlike denominators and then find the sums and differences of fractions with unlike denominators.  All students should continue to work on their math facts fluency, as this continues to be an important component to our lessons.  In science, students completed their lab reflection questions and used data from their lab to complete a CER.  This week, we will have a quiz on properties of matter.  We will then use our knowledge to wonder, “Can matter just disappear?”  After school help will be Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday this week from 2:45 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at michele.simes@haverhill-ps.org.  Have a wonderful weekend.

Ms. Marciano: ELA: We are finishing our Poetry assessments on Monday! Next, we will be moving into our new unit, which is all about AUTHOR’S MESSAGE. Students will be able to identify the messages in fiction and nonfiction and how they can personally connect to each message.

SS: We have spent some time learning about the life of George Washington. Moving forward, we will examine the different goals of the British, the French, and the Native American groups in their conflict over North America. Learning about these goals will allow students to understand how they contributed to the development and outcome of the French and Indian War.

Please make sure that students are continuing to check their grades on the student portal. If students are missing work, they need to make sure they let their teachers know when/what they have completed by making us a list or sending us an email!

Ms. Hogan: This week in social studies, we finished up our chapter on the causes of the American Revolution. We learned about the Intolerable Acts, and we thought about how the acts might have made the colonists feel. On Friday, we finished up the chapter with a quiz. Next week, we will be working on an essay where we will write from the perspective of a patriot or a loyalist. The essay will include reasons why a patriot or loyalist may want to (or not want to) go to war with Britain.

Ms. LaCoste: It’s been a busy week in grade 5 ELA (red, orange, yellow, and green groups)!  Students in all groups spent a bit of extra time in their homerooms completing their winter i-Ready diagnostic tests.  These tests help design instruction that is geared toward your student’s individual needs and helps me get a better understanding of which specific reading skills need strengthening.  On Wednesday, each group participated in a classroom spelling bee.  The top two spellers in each group will move on to the schoolwide spelling bee that will take place on February 4.  All groups took a quiz in which they identified the parts of a plot of a fiction story and also identified the different plot parts of the short story “Dog Breath” by Dav Pilkey.  At the end of the week, students worked to compose their personal narrative stories.

Ms. Consolazio: In science, we are finishing up our Properties of Matter scope.  In class, students did an experiment with the teacher about solubility.  They also wrote their Claim-Evidence-Reasoning about the experiment.  On Friday, students had a quiz on the properties of matter. Please make sure students bring their Chromebook charged every day for class.

Mr. Kelly: We have finished Multiplying and Dividing with Whole Numbers and Decimals. Also we have taken the Winter Diagnostic for I-Ready. Over the next couple of weeks, the students will be writing a reflection on their score. After they have finished their reflection, the reflection will be sent home with the results of their Diagnostic. This week we are starting our unit on Fractions. We will start off with Adding and Subtracting with Fractions. This Unit will take until the week after February Vacation.

Ms. Lees: The students in Fifth grade Orange and Green Groups will work towards finishing up their fiction reading group books and move onto their final drafts of personal narratives. In Math class we will move into working with fractions. Those students with individual goals continue working towards achievement. Students who have LEXIA accounts are encouraged to work at home with their reading online as well as to read every day out loud with someone at home or to themselves. It will help all students to log into iReady for reading or math to strengthen their skills. Please reach out if after school or before school help will support your student. I hope everyone has fun in the snow.

Ms. Blanchette: Students continue to work on grade level curriculum. They are working hard to master skills needed in both ELA and math. Please make sure your child is staying on top of their work. Progress reports for trimester two will be available for parents in the next few weeks. I have extra help next week on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:45-3:30. Please reach out to me with any questions. Have a great week!

GRADE 6:

Ms. Hamel: I want to congratulate our sixth graders on Persevering through their I Ready Diagnostics even when we encountered some technical difficulties! Our students continued to work towards their goals and we are very impressed with the growth our students have made since the fall diagnostic.

SS: Our geographers have begun to explore the political divisions of Africa; the five regions and 54 countries of this extraordinary part of the world. Students will learn how the regions differ in size by studying data about the largest and smallest countries by area. Students will also discover which countries and cities in Africa are the most populated.

ELA: Students have been engaging in lively discussions surrounding the topic of communication when there are language barriers as well as patterns of male dominance in the earlier centuries. Students are able to make connections to today’s world and find ways in which we can overcome obstacles when there doesn’t seem to be explicit directions in place.

We also continue to work on our Fictional Writing while also finding time to read from HOLES and answer thought provoking questions that ties together our overriding questions from the “In the Dark ” unit in StudySync.

Mr. Taylor: ELA – Finishing up Unit 3 in Study sync before starting some narrative writing.

SS- Africa and the political differences across the continent.

Mr. LeGrand: Mathematics:  Students will apply their understanding of equations to solve equations that involves rational numbers.  They will extend prior work with expressions and equations to include writing and solving inequalities.

Social Studies: Students continue to explore the rich continent of Africa.  Students will get the opportunity to research one of the countries from that continent and present their findings to the class.

Ms. Lane: Science: Have you ever lined up a series of dominoes and watched as you pushed just the first one? What happens? Students are learning that waves travel along with an energy transfer, just like when you push that first domino. A wave is a repeating pattern with a specific wavelength, frequency and amplitude. As the students learn more about these new vocabulary words, they will also learn how to apply them when learning about waves. They are moving quickly through this unit and this weekend they will bring home another extra credit assignment to do with their parents or guardians. Please ask them about it and have fun doing it.

It’s called Connecting With Your Child and this activity requires a rope or string and a stationary object, such as a tree or doorknob. HAVE FUN!

Social Studies: The students are studying Africa. They are creating and making African Masks. They finished their packets about the physical geographies. They will finalize their packets about the Ivory Wars next week. They continue to write reports about CNN10 current events every day.

Ms. Tarbox: In ELA, both Yellow and Orange groups are wrapping up their narratives. During small group pullout, students have been busy identifying story elements to help strengthen their comprehension skills. In math, both Yellow and Orange groups are finishing up Topic 4 by completing the end of unit assessment. Be on the lookout for emails regarding updated Fountas & Pinnell reading levels! We are in the process of administering our mid-year benchmark assessments. This will assess progress in fluency, decoding, and reading comprehension since our last assessment in October. As always, please reach out to Mrs. Tarbox with any questions or concerns regarding any subject area, mtarbox@haverhill-ps.org.

GRADE 7:

Mrs. Berthiaume: Once we are finished with the iReady diagnostic in ELA, we will get back into StudySync.  In Social Studies, students did a great job recently with mapping skills.

Mrs. Trombly: Groups are finishing up their IREADY math diagnostics.  We are seeing some wonderful growth.  Students will be getting their scores/progress later next week.

Mrs. MacKinnon: We have begun our unit on geoscience processes.  The students have begun reviewing, or learning about the layers of the Earth.  We have had some reading, doing webquests, a drawing and of course a Bill Nye video to help sum up all they have learned.  They will be moving into the plate tectonic theory this week where we will be ;earning about the plate movement and doing an edible lab on the subject.  Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Ms. DiGloria: In Grade 7 Green and Blue groups, students in English class will be wrapping up some work with Community issues and goals with some collaborative conversation, before moving on to our last text of Unit 3: The SMallest Dragonboy. We will read this short text and begin to work with plot, character, and conflict this week. In Social Studies, students will be delving into Greek history by reviewing a timeline and taking an open-notes quiz, and then learning about the early Greeks who began Ancient Greek civilization. Progress Reports will be issues next Monday, February 7th, and my gradebook for Progress Reports “closes” this Monday, January 31st. Please email me with any questions or concerns.

Mr. Auger: Hello everyone! This week in my 7th grade science class, students began learning about geoscience processes.  We began the week by reviewing the different layers of the Earth’s interior.  Students are learning that Earth’s surface has changed dramatically over the course of millions of years.  Next week, students will learn about tectonic plates, earthquakes, volcanoes and other geoscience processes.  In my 7th grade social studies class, we completed the unit on Korea and Japan this week.  We are now learning about Ancient Greece.  Students finished the week by completing a virtual field trip of Greece.  Next week we will continue to learn more about the culture and history of Greece.  Have a great weekend!

Mr. Harris: Green – students took a break this past week from learning to work on their iReady Diagnostic.  We will pick back up with our dive into proportions, specifically learning about the constant of proportionality (a foundational concept they will use a lot in 8th grade!)

Blue – students took a break this past week from learning to work on their iReady Diagnostic.  We will finish our Chapter 4 look at equivalent expressions, and begin our learning on proportions, starting with equivalent ratios.

A note to all families that have Mr. Harris for math – progress reports are coming out soon (Feb 7th).  Any student that has a D or F in math class was spoken to by me personally, and given a packet of their missing work for makeup.  All students, regardless of grade, have been reminded that they have the ability to make corrections to any quiz/test, as well as the two extra credit opportunities given each week (60 minutes & passing 80& of lessons on iReady in a week, as well as our problem of the week).

Ms. Bilmazes & Ms. Holmes: In ELA and Math, students have completed i-Ready diagnostics, to measure growth and to ensure that key areas of weakness will be addressed. This coming week in ELA, students will continue working on the Chasing the Impossible unit. In math, students will continue working on using variables to solve equations, as well as reviewing Chapter 3. Mrs. Holmes and I have been meeting, during the success block, with those students who have pull-out support in Math and ELA. This time is spent working on a variety of  interventions, such as iReady, additional practice, help with homework and classwork support. In addition, students are receiving support in the classroom from myself, Mrs. Holmes, and/or Ms. Credit.  As always, feel free to reach out with any questions.

GRADE 8:

Mr. Lewis: We have finished The Outsiders and students are working on their essay, which is due this coming Monday, 1/3. We are writing about what it means to be gold and if the characters throughout the story achieve this status. Students have the essay question and handouts on how to write each paragraph. In addition, we have written multiple parts of the essay together in class.

Ms. Deblasis: We will be completing Topic 4 this week.  Our new lessons will be on interpreting two-way frequency tables.  Topic 4 Assessment will be the end of the week.

Mr. Marinella: ELA– Blue and Purple English has started a new novel that we are going to be reading and dissecting; The Call of the Wild. This story is about a dog named Buck who experiences hardships at the hands of his masters and must ultimately find freedom in the Yukon. While men fight and search for gold, Buck will be fighting and searching for his true identity, one that is tied to his wild ancestry. This book is overcoming hardship, connecting with your past, and becoming who you truly are.

Civics– After looking at people in American History who stood up for issues they believed in with our Civil Rights Leaders project, Civics is taking a small break from the curriculum to focus on our Civics Projects. These are done by all 8th grade Civics classes in Massachusetts and are meant for students to use their voice to  address or solve an issue they are passionate about. Much like our Civil Rights leaders, students will become experts in the area they care most about and seek to solve an issue that is harming the community they are a part of. We are already on step 3, Research and Investigation, and will soon be making an action plan!

Ms. Sullivan: This week will explore different materials to determine if a chemical reaction occurred. We will be doing labs, readings and learning vocabulary. Progress reports will be coming soon. Have your child check school brains to see if they are missing any work. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Mr. Blaustein: We completed the last lesson in Ch 4 The Civil Rights Movement with a quiz this Thursday 1/27. We will now begin to prepare for the Chapter 4 Test, which we should complete by the end of the week.

Mr. Harris: students took a break this past week from learning to work on their iReady Diagnostic.  We will pick back up with functions this week by looking at them in different representations, as well as looking at the differences in those representations between linear and nonlinear functions.

Ms. MacKinnon: We have finished our unit on atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds.  The students seem to understand the differences between them.  We are now moving onto Physical and Chemical properties and Changes. We will analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred. We will do experiments using  examples of reactions that could include burning sugar or steel wool, fat reacting with sodium hydroxide, and mixing zinc with HCl and showing the properties of substances that include density, melting point, boiling point, solubility, flammability, and odor. Use information from our readings  to illustrate that materials maintain their composition under various kinds of physical processing; however, some material properties may change if a process changes the particulate structure of a material.

Ms. Senior: Eighth graders are becoming experts at the five paragraph essay, which includes a thesis statement, supporting evidence and a conclusion. In Math, the Winter iReady testing is happening, along with more in depth study into slope, y intercept and types of scatter plots.
