Happy Long Weekend JG Whittier Families,
Here are some highlights from the past week, and some news of upcoming info and events.
PTO Spaghetti Supper: Families, get ready for one of my favorite nights of the school year! Our annual PTO Spaghetti Supper is scheduled for Wednesday, October 23rd from 6-8pm. Come enjoy a great meal and connect with the JG Whittier family! We are planning a 50/50 raffle, and if there are any families interested in donating raffle baskets, please let us know. Please see the attached flyer for more details, including an RSVP that must be returned to school by this Wednesday, October 16th. I hope to see most of your there!
JGW Pasta Night 2019 – English and Spanish
SPORTS NEWS:
SOCCER: The Soccer team will be playing two away games this week. On Wednesday 10/16 the game will be at Consentino with the girls playing first. On Thursday 10/17 the game will be at Hunking with the boys playing first. Good luck to our Poets!
GIRL’S BASKETBALL: Any girl in grades 6-8 who is interested in playing on the basketball team is invited to an informational meeting on Wednesday 10/16 during recess. Tryouts will be held after school on Wednesday 10/23 and Friday 10/25. All participants will need to submit a signed health form and contract before trying out.
BOY’S BASKETBALL: Please stay tuned for more information in regard to boy’s basketball, as we are currently in search of a coach at this time.
CLUB NEWS:
JR VIP: There will be a JR VIP meeting on Wednesday 10/16 from 2:45-3:45pm in the library
CHORUS: Chorus will continue to meet after school on Tuesdays
SCHOOL NEWS TEAM: School News team was a huge success this week. The first edition will go on sale at all lunches on Monday, October 21st.
FACILITIES NEWS:
The work on the JG Whittier roof continues as scheduled to repair any existing leaks. It should also be noted that the new boiler has been installed successfully, and as soon as a carbon monoxide detector is hardwired to the boiler (which is scheduled for this Monday, 10/14) it will be ready to operate. We continue to be grateful to all of the work crews who make necessary repairs to our school with little to no disruption to the regular school day.

COOKIE FUNDRAISER: Please see the attached form for details in regard to cookie pick-up and prizes. All cookie pick-ups will occur in our school gym.

PROGRESS REPORTS: 1st Trimester progress reports went home on Friday, 10/11. We ask that all progress reports are signed and returned to the school (homeroom teacher) by this Friday, 10/18.
SCHOOL DANCE: Our first school dance is scheduled for Friday, November 1st. This will be our annual Halloween/Costume dance. Grades 5-6 dance will be from 3-5pm in the cafeteria. Grades 7-8 dance will be from 6-8pm in the cafeteria. Tickets will go on sale in the main office the week of the dance and can be purchased for $5. If students wait and buy tickets at the door, they are $6. If there are any 7th or 8th grade students who are interested in helping with the dance, they are asked to please see Ms. DiGloria.
BOOK FAIR: We want to thank everyone for making our book fair a huge success! We were able to earn nearly $3,400 which will help us build our school library by purchasing new books!
PINK OUT DAY: Please help us support Breast Cancer Awareness by having your student participate in PINK OUT DAY this Friday, 10/18. This is an event that our National Junior Honor Society is asking all students and staff to help out with. By wearing pink on Friday, we will help bring awareness to this disease. In fact we are making this our Good Citizenship Program monthly challenge! The grade with the highest participation of wearing pink will receive first place GCP points (40)! There will be points awarded to 2nd-4th place as well.
GCP PROGRAM: Speaking of the Good Citizenship Program, the first winners of our Good Citizen of the month were announced this week. I went around and distributed GCP t-shirts to all of the deserving winners in their classrooms on Thursday. Here are our winners for the month of September: Gr. 5 Sophia Jones, Ryan Hatch, Kaleigh Pettingill, and Anderson Reyes-Diaz Gr. 6 Lauryn Mazza, Cam Morse, Sienna MacKinnon, and Skye Skinner Gr. 7 Autumn LaMothe, Josh Bertocchi, Jocelyn Harvey, and Franklin Finnin-Andrews Gr. 8 Maddie Noury, Denzel Oduah, Ava Paradis, and Mia Gauron

PTO Spaghetti Supper: ¡Familias, prepárense para una de mis noches favoritas del año escolar! Nuestra cena anual de espaguetis de PTO está programada para el miércoles 23 de octubre de 6 a 8 pm. ¡Ven a disfrutar de una excelente comida y conéctate con la familia JG Whittier! Estamos planeando un sorteo 50/50, y si hay familias interesadas en donar canastas de sorteo, háganoslo saber. NOTICIAS DEPORTIVAS:
FÚTBOL: El equipo de fútbol jugará dos partidos fuera de casa esta semana. El miércoles 10/16 el juego será en Consentino con las chicas jugando primero. El jueves 17/10 el juego será en Hunking con los niños jugando primero. ¡Buena suerte a nuestros poetas!
BALONCESTO DE NIÑA: Cualquier niña en los grados 6-8 que esté interesada en jugar en el equipo de baloncesto está invitada a una reunión informativa el miércoles 10/16 durante el recreo. Las pruebas se llevarán a cabo después de clases el miércoles 10/23 y el viernes 10/25. Todos los participantes deberán presentar un formulario de salud firmado y un contrato antes de probar.
BALONCESTO DE NIÑO: Estén atentos para obtener más información sobre el baloncesto masculino, ya que actualmente estamos buscando un entrenador en este momento.

EQUIPO DE NOTICIAS ESCOLARES: El equipo de School News fue un gran éxito esta semana. La primera edición saldrá a la venta en todos los almuerzos el lunes 21 de octubre.
NOTICIAS DE INSTALACIONES:
El trabajo en el techo JG Whittier continúa según lo programado para reparar cualquier gotera existente. También se debe tener en cuenta que la nueva caldera se ha instalado con éxito, y tan pronto como un detector de monóxido de carbono esté conectado a la caldera (que está programado para este lunes, 10/14) estará listo para funcionar. Seguimos agradecidos con todos los equipos de trabajo que realizan las reparaciones necesarias en nuestra escuela con poca o ninguna interrupción en el día escolar regular.

REPORTE DE PROGRESO: Los informes de progreso del primer trimestre se enviaron a casa el viernes 10/11. Pedimos que todos los informes de progreso sean firmados y devueltos a la escuela (maestro de aula) para este viernes, 10/18.
BAILE ESCOLAR: Nuestro primer baile escolar está programado para el viernes 1 de noviembre. Este será nuestro baile anual de disfraces de Halloween. El baile de los grados 5-6 será de 3-5pm en la cafetería. El baile de los grados 7-8 será de 6-8pm en la cafetería. Los boletos saldrán a la venta en la oficina principal la semana del baile y se pueden comprar por $ 5. Si los estudiantes esperan y compran boletos en la puerta, son $ 6. Si hay estudiantes de séptimo u octavo grado que estén interesados en ayudar con el baile, se les pide que vean a la Sra. DiGloria.
FERIA DEL LIBRO: ¡Queremos agradecer a todos por hacer de nuestra feria de libros un gran éxito! ¡Pudimos ganar casi $ 3,400 que nos ayudarán a construir nuestra biblioteca escolar comprando nuevos libros!
DÍA ROSADO: Ayúdenos a apoyar la Conciencia del Cáncer de Mama haciendo que su estudiante participe en PINK OUT DAY este viernes, 10/18. Este es un evento en el que nuestra National Junior Honor Society está pidiendo ayuda a todos los estudiantes y al personal. Al vestir de rosa el viernes, ayudaremos a crear conciencia sobre esta enfermedad. De hecho, ¡estamos haciendo de este nuestro desafío mensual del Programa de Buena Ciudadanía! ¡La calificación con la mayor participación de usar rosa recibirá los primeros puntos de GCP (40)! También se otorgarán puntos al segundo y cuarto lugar.
PROGRAMA GCP: Hablando del Programa de Buena Ciudadanía, los primeros ganadores de nuestro Buen Ciudadano del mes fueron anunciados esta semana. Di una vuelta y distribuí camisetas de GCP a todos los ganadores que merecían en sus aulas el jueves.
