We are a mere 10 school days away from our Winter Vacation! There is a lot going on in and around our school over the next couple of weeks, so please see below for important information:
ACADEMIC NEWS:
REPORT CARDS: All students will receive their report cards on Monday, 12/9. Please make sure that a parent/guardian signs the report card envelope, and that it is returned to school no later than Friday, 12/13. Thank you.
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES: Parent/Teacher conferences will take place this Thursday, 12/12 from 6-7:30pm. The PTO will also be sponsoring a restaurant night at Beach Pizza in downtown Haverhill (181 Merrimack St.) as well to make things easy for dinner for everyone that night. So come to conferences and then order and pick up a pizza. 20% of all proceeds will go straight to JGW. Thank you for your support!
SPELLING BEE: There will be a school wide spelling bee on, Monday, Jan. 13, at 9 AM in the gym.
SPORTS NEWS:
GIRL’S BASKETBALL: Come support the girl’s basketball team as they travel to Nettle to take on the Knights on Tuesday 12/10. They will be playing second with the game starting around 4:30pm. The girls will also practice after school on Wednesday and Thursday (12/11 & 12/12) from 3-5pm.
BOY’S BASKETBALL: The boy’s basketball team will practice after school on Monday, 12/9 from 3-5pm to prepare for their game @Nettle on Tuesday 12/10. The boys will be playing first, tipping off around 3:30pm. The boys will also have practice after school on Friday, 12/13 from 3-5pm.
CHEERLEADING: The cheerleaders will be practicing after school on Monday, 12/9 & Wednesday 12/11 from 3-5pm. They will also be traveling with the basketball teams to Nettle on Tuesday, 12/10 to help support them against the Knights!
CLUB NEWS:
BAND: The Whittier Band will be performing their concert alongside Nettle on Tuesday, December 10th at 6:30pm in the Nettle Cafeteria immediately following our team’s basketball games against Nettle. Admission is free.
YEARBOOK COMMITTEE: Any 8th grade student interested in being on the yearbook committee should attend a meeting Tuesday, December 10th after school until 3:30 in Room 19.
POETRY CLUB: Poetry Club will meet in Room 15 on Friday, Dec. 13, at 12:30 during lunch recess. This is for grades 7 and 8.
MODEL UN: Model UN members should be finishing up their third paragraph (and paper) by Monday, December 2nd so they can be sent for review. Our conference dates (12/10 and 12/11) are quickly approaching so we will be wrapping things up and getting debate ready during the December meetings.
SCHOOL NEWS: The Poet is on sale at all lunches for $0.25 each.
CHORUS: Chorus meets every Tuesday after school from 2:45 – 4:00pm.
WINTER CONCERT 2019: Mr. Gariepy is pleased to announce that JGW will be having our 2nd Annual Winter Concert on Friday, December 20th 2018 at 1:30pm in the Gymnasium. The Winter Concert is a very fun and exciting event that will include selections from the J.G. Whittier Middle School Chorus, songs from yesterday’s and today’s radio stations, and even performances from the JGW Cheer Squad led by Ms. Beckwith! GUIDANCE/NURSING NEWS:
To all 7th grade families, a letter went home on Friday 11/22 from the school nurse and school counselor regarding the SBIRT screening. On Monday, December 9th, grade 7 students will meet briefly for a confidential screening. We will use the CRAFFT II screening tool, the most commonly used substance use screening tool for adolescents. All screenings will be held in private one-on-one sessions with one of the nurses or counselors. Students who are not using substances will have their healthy choices reinforced. When any student reports using alcohol or other drugs, or seems at risk for future substance use, the screener will ask 5 more questions, provide brief feedback and have a brief conversation with that student. If you have any questions, please reach out to Kelsey Cartwright- school nurse, or Jacquie Vlahos- school counselor.

- The PTO is hosting a restaurant night at Beach Pizza in downtown Haverhill (181 Merrimack St.) during Parent/Teacher conferences on Thursday, December 12th. 20% of the sales will be donated to the PTO.
- The PTO is forming a library committee and a STEM closet committee to help organize and purchase materials. If you are interested in joining, please e-mail jgwhittierpto@yahoo.com.
COMMUNICATION: Please remember that you can reach out to your student’s teachers whenever you want an update, or have questions or concerns. It is our policy that teachers will respond to any email communication within 24 hours. If you do not hear back from staff within that time, please contact the main office.
COLD WEATHER: The snow is here, and it will be cold from now until spring. With that being said, we kindly ask that you send your students to school prepared with jackets, hats, and gloves. We will make every attempt to take the students outside for recess each day if possible. This includes if there is snow on the ground and if it is cold. It is important that all students are prepared to bundle up. The rules with the snow are that students are not allowed to pick up and throw/kick snow at each other. Students are also not allowed to climb on snow piles and are encouraged to stay off of any ice in order to prevent injury. It would be greatly appreciated if parents reviewed these rules with their students. In the case that there is indoor recess due to the cold/weather, all students are to remain in their homerooms for the duration of their recess period.
ATTENDANCE: The first step to being successful in school is to show up to school daily! With the weather becoming cold and snowy, we recognize that it is more difficult to get out of bed and to school daily on time. It is imperative that students are still doing so. If you are having difficulty getting your student to school daily on time, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mr. Betty, Mrs. Vlahos, or Mrs. Midolo for support. Attendance letters will be mailed home to students who have missed 4-6 days as a reminder of the importance of being in school consistently. If a student misses 7 or more school days, a letter will be mailed to set up an attendance meeting with the school to discuss what support is needed and a plan for success moving forward. Please make every attempt to send your student to school each day, and if they do need to be out of school due to illness, please make sure doctor’s notes are shared with our main office. Thank you!
NO SHAVE NOVEMBER: We would like to thank all students and families who donated to No Shave November. We were able to raise a few hundred dollars to donate to cancer research. The results are in! It seemed to be a 2 person race for the entire month between our 5th grade ELA/SS teacher, Mr. Marinella, and one of our 7th grade Math teachers, Mr. LeGrand. Mr. Marinella raised $88.34 in his jar, however, Mr. LeGrand raised an incredible $175.95 in his jar to run away with the competition!! Now Mr. LeGrand will owe the students some sort of embarrassing act, so stay tuned for pictures of that!! There is already rumor of dying his beard pink!! CONCURSO DE ORTOGRAFÍA: Habrá un concurso de ortografía en toda la escuela el lunes 13 de enero a las 9 AM en el gimnasio.

El ganador de la abeja escolar pasa al campeonato regional y, a partir de ahí, ¡ese ganador compite en el Scripps National Spelling Bee en Washington, DC, en la primavera!

NOTICIAS DEPORTIVAS:
BALONCESTO DE NIÑA: Venga a apoyar al equipo de baloncesto de la niña mientras viajan a Nettle para enfrentarse a los Caballeros el martes 12/10. Jugarán en segundo lugar con el juego a partir de las 4:30 p.m. Las niñas también practicarán después de la escuela los miércoles y jueves (12/11 y 12/12) de 3-5pm.
BALONCESTO DE NIÑO: El equipo de baloncesto del niño practicará después de la escuela el lunes 12/9 de 3-5pm para prepararse para su juego @Nettle el martes 12/10. Los niños jugarán primero, dando vueltas alrededor de las 3:30 pm. Los niños también tendrán práctica después del horario escolar el viernes 12/13 de 3-5pm.
ANIMADORAS: Las animadoras estarán practicando después de la escuela el lunes 12/9 y el miércoles 12/11 de 3-5pm. ¡También viajarán con los equipos de baloncesto a Nettle el martes 12/10 para ayudarlos a enfrentar a los Caballeros!
NOTICIAS DEL CLUB:
BANDA: The Whittier Band presentará su concierto junto a Nettle el martes 10 de diciembre a las 6:30 pm en la cafetería Nettle inmediatamente después de los juegos de baloncesto de nuestro equipo contra Nettle. La admisión es gratuita.

GUÍA / NOTICIAS DE ENFERMERÍA:
Para todas las familias de 7º grado, el viernes 11/22, una enfermera y un consejero escolar enviaron una carta a casa sobre el examen SBIRT. El lunes 9 de diciembre, los estudiantes de séptimo grado se reunirán brevemente para una evaluación confidencial. Utilizaremos la herramienta de detección CRAFFT II, la herramienta de detección de uso de sustancias más utilizada para adolescentes. Todas las evaluaciones se realizarán en sesiones privadas uno a uno con una de las enfermeras o consejeros. Los estudiantes que no usan sustancias tendrán sus elecciones saludables reforzadas. Cuando cualquier estudiante informa que usa alcohol u otras drogas, o parece estar en riesgo de usar sustancias en el futuro, el evaluador hará 5 preguntas más, brindará comentarios breves y mantendrá una breve conversación con ese estudiante. Si tiene alguna pregunta, comuníquese con Kelsey Cartwright, enfermera de la escuela, o Jacquie Vlahos, consejera de la escuela.

COMUNICACIÓN: Recuerde que puede comunicarse con los maestros de su estudiante cuando desee una actualización o si tiene preguntas o inquietudes. Es nuestra política que los maestros respondan a cualquier comunicación por correo electrónico dentro de las 24 horas. Si no recibe respuesta del personal dentro de ese tiempo, comuníquese con la oficina principal.
CLIMA FRÍO: La nieve está aquí y hará frío desde ahora hasta la primavera. Dicho esto, le pedimos amablemente que envíe a sus estudiantes a la escuela preparados con chaquetas, sombreros y guantes. Haremos todo lo posible para llevar a los estudiantes al recreo todos los días si es posible. Esto incluye si hay nieve en el suelo y si hace frío. Es importante que todos los estudiantes estén preparados para abrigarse. Las reglas con la nieve son que a los estudiantes no se les permite levantarse y tirarse / patearse nieve unos a otros. Tampoco se les permite a los estudiantes trepar sobre montones de nieve y se les anima a mantenerse alejados de cualquier hielo para evitar lesiones. Sería muy apreciado si los padres revisaran estas reglas con sus estudiantes. En el caso de que haya un recreo en el interior debido al frío / clima, todos los estudiantes deben permanecer en sus aulas durante el período de recreo.
ASISTENCIA: ¡El primer paso para tener éxito en la escuela es presentarse a la escuela todos los días! Con el clima frío y nevoso, reconocemos que es más difícil levantarse de la cama y ir a la escuela todos los días a tiempo. Es imperativo que los estudiantes sigan haciéndolo. Si tiene dificultades para llevar a su estudiante a la escuela todos los días a tiempo, no dude en comunicarse con el Sr. Betty, la Sra. Vlahos o la Sra. Midolo para obtener ayuda. Las cartas de asistencia se enviarán por correo a los estudiantes que hayan faltado de 4 a 6 días como recordatorio de la importancia de estar en la escuela constantemente. Si un estudiante pierde 7 o más días escolares, se enviará una carta por correo para programar una reunión de asistencia con la escuela para discutir qué apoyo se necesita y un plan para el éxito en el futuro. Haga todo lo posible para enviar a su hijo a la escuela todos los días, y si necesita estar fuera de la escuela debido a una enfermedad, asegúrese de compartir las notas del médico con nuestra oficina principal. ¡Gracias!
NO AFEITAR NOVIEMBRE: Nos gustaría agradecer a todos los estudiantes y familias que donaron a No Shave November. Pudimos recaudar unos cientos de dólares para donar a la investigación del cáncer. Los resultados están en! Parecía ser una carrera de 2 personas durante todo el mes entre nuestro maestro de ELA / SS de quinto grado, el Sr. Marinella, y uno de nuestros maestros de matemáticas de séptimo grado, el Sr. LeGrand. ¡El Sr. Marinella recaudó $ 88.34 en su frasco, sin embargo, el Sr. LeGrand recaudó $ 175.95 increíbles en su frasco para escapar con la competencia!
