Hello JGW Families! I am sorry that there was not an update last week, but I felt that everyone was just getting back into the swing of things! I hope that everyone had a great holiday season and is now back into the groove. There is a lot of information to share you with you for this week, so please enjoy:

IMPORTANT NEWS/INFO:

–This Wednesday, January 15, 2020 is an Early Release Day for all students. Students will be released at 11:05am. 

–MCAS: I can’t believe it is already that time, but we are starting to really prepare for this spring’s upcoming MCAS testing. Our Instructional Leadership Team along with grade level teams are looking at ways of intervening with our students to help each student be as successful as possible. Things that you can do at home to help support this is to make sure students are consistently coming to school each day. We will try to put out different strategies weekly in order for you to continue to support your students success from home.

PTO: Our next PTO meeting will be on Wednesday, February 12th at 6pm in Room 10 at JGW.

-The PTO is hosting a restaurant night at Five Guys in Plaistow, NH on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 from 4-9 pm.  15% of all sales will be donated to the PTO.  (Please see attached flyer)
-The PTO is looking for 8th grade parents who would be interested in joining the committee to plan the Grade 8 Promotion Dance.  If you are interested, please e-mail the PTO at jgwhittierpto@yahoo.com and/or attend the next PTO meeting on Wednesday, February 12th at 6 pm in room 10.
-The PTO is seeking donations for their upcoming calendar raffle. The success of this fundraiser is made possible by the donations from local businesses and families that support JG Whittier. If you have access to an item that you would like to donate, we would sincerely appreciate your generosity. All donations made are a tax deduction for you or your business, and it’s a great way to promote your local business to local families. Below are some examples of donations we have received in the past.

SITE COUNCIL: Our next Site Council Meeting will be on Wednesday, 2/12 from 5-6pm.
GUIDANCE NEWS: 

The school counselor, Mrs. Vlahos, is currently working with 8th grade students to prepare them for their transition to high school.  Throughout the month of January, Mrs. Vlahos will be visiting 8th grade tech classes to go over interview skills and provide students with practice interview questions that they can use to prepare for high school interviews and job interviews in the future.
        Important Dates & Deadlines:
  • Whittier Tech Interviews are scheduled for Wednesday February 5, 2020 and Thursday February 6, 2020 for any 8th grade applicant.  Applicants will be notified of their interview date and time.
  • Essex Tech interviews are scheduled for Thursday March 12, 2020 for any 8th grade applicant. Applicants will be notified of their interview time.
  • HHS Classical Academy application is attached for any 8th grade student interested in applying.  The deadline for Classical applications is Monday January 27, 2020. Classical Application 2019_2020 (1)
  • HHS CTE (Career Technical Education) Program application is also attached for any 8th grade student interested in applying.  The deadline for the CTE applications is Friday February 7, 2020. CTEApplication-ENG

The “Hillie For A Day” initiative allows prospective 8th grade students spend the day at Haverhill High School and see, first hand, the exciting programs and opportunities they have to offer.  It also gives students the opportunity to meet and connect with faculty, staff and students at HHS.  Parents/guardians can register their child to shadow at HHS by completing the online registration form by accessing this link:  https://forms.gle/gqWRhwGpvTfu3t5P6.  Students can also obtain a shadow request form from Mrs. Vlahos in Guidance.

At the end of this month and throughout the month of February, Mrs. Vlahos will conduct brief check-ins with sixth grade students.  The goal of these check-ins is to collect data on how the students feel things are going for themselves at this point in the school year.  These check-ins will happen during students’ technology period.  Mrs. Vlahos looks forward to this work with the students across sixth grade!
GCP NEWS: We would like to congratulate the following students for being named the Good Citizen of the Month for the month of December! They will be receiving their t-shirts on Monday, 1/13. ACADEMIC/CLASSROOM NEWS: 
The all-school spelling bee will be held on Monday, January 13th, at 9 a.m. in the gymnasium. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend. The winner of our school bee will take a written test in February to qualify for the regional bee at Lynn City Hall in March. That winner will go to Washington, DC, for the Scripps National Spelling Bee! Good luck to all spellers!
GRADE 5: Each month the Grade 5 teachers hold a “Superstars” assembly to recognize students for their efforts in the classroom. Winners will be posted each month on our website, and we would like to congratulate the students who have been recognized so far this school year: Sofia Jones, Eve Farrell, Cash Martinez, Jeremy Silverio Gomez, Christopher Jones, Carson Johnston, Sophia Barbosa, Baylee Purcell, Cameron Franz, Valeria Acosta, Cameron Fawcett, Christopher Mota, Avery Borden, Carlos Caceres, Kayleigh Douglas, Lauryn Calkins, Abigail Pfeil, Angelina Rivera, Jude Oosting, Camila Guzman Gomez, Jadiel Amaro, Jameson Casullo, Shannon Gallagher, Liam Gray.
GRADE 6: The district has partnered with HP3 (Haverhill Public-Private Partnership) to provide our 6th grade students with career readiness education and skills so that eventually, every public school student in Haverhill will be able to achieve a living wage job. The grade 6 students will be attending a career fair event on Tuesday, 1/21 from 9:30-11:00am.
That evening there will be a parent engagement dinner for all 6th grade parents from 6-7pm. (Please see attachments below)
GRADE 7: ELA STAR Assessments will be on Thursday, 1/16 during ELA classes.
Students in Ms. DiGloria’s 7th grade Social Studies class put on their detective caps before the holiday break to solve a murder mystery. Students used their logic, reasoning, and a variety or maps and artifacts to delve into East Asian geography and try to catch a killer! There was a lot of excitement as students cracked each clue, and many groups competed against one another to see who could solve it first over the course of a few class periods!

SPORTS NEWS: 
GIRL’S BASKETBALL-The Girls will have 2 games this week. They have a make-up game at Hunking on Tuesday 1/14, and will be playing first. There is also a game at home versus Nettle on Thursday 1/16. They will play second that day. The girls only practice this week is on Friday, 1/17 from 3-5pm to begin to prepare for the playoffs!
BOY’S BASKETBALL- The Boys will also have 2 games this week. They have a make-up game at Hunking on Tuesday 1/14, and will be playing second. There is also a game at home versus Nettle on Thursday 1/16. They will play first that day. The boy’s practice schedule will be on Monday after school from 3-5pm and Wednesday right after school (it is a half day).
CHEERLEADING- The cheerleading team will be practicing on Monday 1/13 from 3-6pm and again on Wednesday, 1/15 from 3-5pm. They will also be traveling with the basketball teams on Tuesday to help support them at Hunking and again at home on Thursday versus Nettle.
CLUB NEWS: 
ACADEMIC BOWL- There will be academic bowl practice for both the junior and senior team on Tuesday, 1/14 and Thursday 1/16 from 2:45-3:45pm in room 11 after school. All practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school.
JR VIP- There will be a JR VIP meeting after school on Thursday, 1/16 from 2:45-3:45pm in the library.
POETRY CLUB- There will be a poetry club meeting on Friday, 1/24 at 12:30pm in room 15. This is for grades 7 & 8 and new members are always welcome. Students will be writing Valentine Poetry for the residents at the Wingate Rehab and long-term care facility.
OTHER INFO: 
COMMUNICATION: Please remember that you can reach out to your student’s teachers whenever you want an update, or have questions or concerns. It is our policy that teachers will respond to any email communication within 24 hours. If you do not hear back from staff within that time, please contact the main office. We also encourage you to utilize the student portal.

COLD WEATHER: The snow, ice, and wind is here, and it will be cold from now until spring (this past weekend excluded!). With that being said, we kindly ask that you send your students to school prepared with jackets, hats, and gloves. We will make every attempt to take the students outside for recess each day if possible. This includes if there is snow on the ground and if it is cold. It is important that all students are prepared to bundle up. The rules with the snow are that students are not allowed to pick up and throw/kick snow at each other. Students are also not allowed to climb on snow piles and are encouraged to stay off of any ice in order to prevent injury. It would be greatly appreciated if parents reviewed these rules with their students. In the case that there is indoor recess due to the cold/weather, all students are to remain in their homerooms for the duration of their recess period.

ATTENDANCE: The first step to being successful in school is to show up to school daily! With the weather becoming cold and snowy, we recognize that it is more difficult to get out of bed and to school daily on time. It is imperative that students are still doing so. If you are having difficulty getting your student to school daily on time, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mr. Betty, Mrs. Vlahos, or Mrs. Midolo for support. Attendance letters will be mailed home to students who have missed 4-6 days as a reminder of the importance of being in school consistently. If a student misses 7 or more school days, a letter will be mailed to set up an attendance meeting with the school to discuss what support is needed and a plan for success moving forward. Please make every attempt to send your student to school each day, and if they do need to be out of school due to illness, please make sure doctor’s notes are shared with our main office. ¡Hola familias de JGW! Lamento que no hubo una actualización la semana pasada, ¡pero sentí que todos estaban volviendo al ritmo de las cosas! Espero que todos hayan tenido una gran temporada de vacaciones y ahora estén de vuelta en la rutina. Hay mucha información para compartir con ustedes esta semana, así que disfruten:

NOTICIAS IMPORTANTES / INFORMACIÓN: 

– Este miércoles 15 de enero de 2020 es un Día de Salida Temprana para todos los estudiantes. Los estudiantes saldrán a las 11:05 am.

– MCAS : No puedo creer que ya sea ese momento, pero estamos empezando a prepararnos realmente para las próximas pruebas MCAS de esta primavera. Nuestro equipo de liderazgo educativo junto con los equipos de nivel de grado están buscando formas de intervenir con nuestros estudiantes para ayudar a cada estudiante a tener el mayor éxito posible. Lo que puede hacer en casa para ayudar a apoyar esto es asegurarse de que los estudiantes asistan a la escuela todos los días. Intentaremos presentar diferentes estrategias semanalmente para que pueda continuar apoyando el éxito de sus estudiantes desde casa.

NOTICIAS DE ORIENTACIÓN:

La consejera escolar, la Sra. Vlahos, actualmente está trabajando con estudiantes de 8º grado para prepararlos para su transición a la escuela secundaria. A lo largo del mes de enero, la Sra. Vlahos visitará las clases de tecnología de octavo grado para repasar las habilidades de entrevista y proporcionar a los estudiantes preguntas de entrevistas de práctica que pueden usar para prepararse para entrevistas en la escuela secundaria y entrevistas de trabajo en el futuro.

Fechas importantes y plazos:

  • Las entrevistas tecnológicas de Whittier están programadas para Miércoles 5 de febrero de 2020 y Jueves 6 de febrero de 2020 para cualquier solicitante de octavo grado. Los solicitantes serán notificados de la fecha y hora de su entrevista.

La iniciativa “Hillie For A Day” permite a los futuros estudiantes de octavo grado pasar el día en la escuela secundaria Haverhill y ver, de primera mano, los emocionantes programas y oportunidades que tienen para ofrecer. También les brinda a los estudiantes la oportunidad de conocer y conectarse con el profesorado, el personal y los estudiantes de HHS. Los estudiantes también pueden obtener un formulario de solicitud sombra de la Sra. Vlahos en Orientación.

NOTICIAS ACADÉMICAS / EN EL AULA:

El concurso de ortografía para toda la escuela se llevará a cabo el lunes 13 de enero a las 9 am en el gimnasio. Los padres y tutores son bienvenidos. GRADO 7: Las evaluaciones ELA STAR serán el jueves, 1/16 durante las clases de ELA.

Los estudiantes de la clase de Estudios Sociales de séptimo grado de la Sra. DiGloria se pusieron sus gorras de detective antes de las vacaciones para resolver un misterio de asesinato. ¡Los estudiantes usaron su lógica, razonamiento y una variedad de mapas y artefactos para profundizar en la geografía del este asiático e intentar atrapar a un asesino! Hubo mucha emoción cuando los estudiantes descifraron cada pista, ¡y muchos grupos compitieron entre sí para ver quién podía resolverlo primero en el transcurso de unos pocos períodos de clase!

  

GRADO 8: Consulte las noticias de orientación anteriores para conocer las fechas importantes con respecto a las inscripciones de octavo grado para la escuela secundaria.

NOTICIAS DEPORTIVAS:

BALONCESTO DE NIÑA Las chicas tendrán 2 juegos esta semana. Tienen un juego de maquillaje en Hunking el martes 1/14, y jugarán primero. También hay un juego en casa contra Nettle el jueves 1/16. Jugarán segundo ese día. ¡Las chicas solo practican esta semana es el viernes, 1/17 de 3-5pm para comenzar a prepararse para los playoffs!

BALONCESTO MUCHACHO Los Boys también tendrán 2 juegos esta semana. Tienen un juego de maquillaje en Hunking el martes 1/14, y jugarán segundo. ANIMADORAS- El equipo de porristas practicará el lunes 1/13 de 3 a 6 pm y nuevamente el miércoles 1/15 de 3 a 5 pm. También viajarán con los equipos de baloncesto el martes para ayudarlos en Hunking y nuevamente en casa el jueves contra Nettle.

NOTICIAS DEL CLUB:

CUENCO ACADÉMICO Habrá una práctica académica de tazón para el equipo junior y senior el martes, 14 de enero y jueves 16 de enero de 2: 45-3: 45pm en el salón 11 después de la escuela. Todas las prácticas serán los martes y jueves después de la escuela.

JR VIP- Habrá una reunión JR VIP después de la escuela el jueves, 1/16 de 2: 45-3: 45pm en la biblioteca.

CLUB DE POESÍA Habrá una reunión del club de poesía el viernes 24 de enero a las 12:30 pm en la sala 15. Esto es para los grados 7 y 8 y los nuevos miembros siempre son bienvenidos. Los estudiantes escribirán Valentine Poetry para los residentes de Wingate Rehab y el centro de atención a largo plazo.

OTRA INFORMACIÓN:

COMUNICACIÓN: Recuerde que puede comunicarse con los maestros de su estudiante cuando desee una actualización o si tiene preguntas o inquietudes. Es nuestra política que los maestros respondan a cualquier comunicación por correo electrónico dentro de las 24 horas. Si no recibe respuesta del personal dentro de ese tiempo, comuníquese con la oficina principal. También lo alentamos a utilizar el portal del estudiante.

CLIMA FRÍO: La nieve, el hielo y el viento están aquí, y hará frío desde ahora hasta la primavera (¡excluido el fin de semana pasado!). Dicho esto, le pedimos amablemente que envíe a sus estudiantes a la escuela preparados con chaquetas, sombreros y guantes. Haremos todo lo posible para llevar a los estudiantes al recreo todos los días si es posible. Esto incluye si hay nieve en el suelo y si hace frío. Es importante que todos los estudiantes estén preparados para abrigarse. Las reglas con la nieve son que a los estudiantes no se les permite levantarse y tirarse / patearse nieve unos a otros. Tampoco se les permite a los estudiantes trepar sobre montones de nieve y se les anima a mantenerse alejados de cualquier hielo para evitar lesiones. Sería muy apreciado si los padres revisaran estas reglas con sus estudiantes. En el caso de que haya un recreo en el interior debido al frío / clima, todos los estudiantes deben permanecer en sus aulas durante el período de recreo.

ASISTENCIA: ¡El primer paso para tener éxito en la escuela es presentarse a la escuela todos los días! Con el clima frío y nevoso, reconocemos que es más difícil levantarse de la cama y ir a la escuela todos los días a tiempo. Es imperativo que los estudiantes sigan haciéndolo. Si tiene dificultades para llevar a su estudiante a la escuela todos los días a tiempo, no dude en comunicarse con el Sr. Betty, la Sra. Vlahos o la Sra. Midolo para obtener ayuda. Las cartas de asistencia se enviarán por correo a los estudiantes que hayan faltado de 4 a 6 días como recordatorio de la importancia de estar en la escuela constantemente. Si un estudiante pierde 7 o más días escolares, se enviará una carta por correo para programar una reunión de asistencia con la escuela para discutir qué apoyo se necesita y un plan para el éxito en el futuro. Haga todo lo posible para enviar a su hijo a la escuela todos los días, y si necesita estar fuera de la escuela debido a una enfermedad, asegúrese de compartir las notas del médico con nuestra oficina principal. ¡Gracias!
