Principal’s Weekly Update (9/13-9/17)

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL & MAIN OFFICE NEWS

Welcome Back to all of our new and returning students and families!! We are now two full weeks into the school year, and finally starting to hit our stride! It is wonderful to see all of our students back in the classrooms! We look forward to an amazing school year, that still prioritizes safety as well as educational and emotional support for all students. We look forward to continuing a partnership with all of our families and community to ensure the success of all students.

You can expect a weekly update each Friday with all of the important news that is happening in and around our school and all of our classrooms. Please see below for some important news and reminders for all students and families:

Chromebooks: PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR STUDENT IS COMING TO SCHOOL DAILY WITH THEIR CHROMEBOOKS FULLY CHARGED. THANK YOU!!

School Start Time: Please be aware that the school day begins at 8:30am sharp. If you drop your students off to school please make sure that they are arriving by 8:25am to avoid being late. Feel free to begin dropping students off at any time after 8:05am. We appreciate your attention to this matter.

Attendance: A reminder to all families that if your student will be absent for the day, please make sure to call the main office (978-374-5782) to notify the school. Thank you.

ATTENDANCE CONTEST: Don’t forget that a student in our school will win a prize for attending school every day this week. We know students get sick, so if you don’t feel well stay home and keep your classmates healthy too. You will have a chance to win each week throughout this month!

Buses: All students must produce a bus pass in order to ride a regular bus. We are no longer taking attendance in the afternoon upon students getting on the bus. That makes it very important that students are paying attention in the afternoon for their buses to be called in order to not miss their bus.

Dress Code: We receive many questions about our school’s dress code. We would ask that all families please review the Haverhill Public Schools Dress Code Policy with their students in order to ensure that it is properly being followed. Thank you for your attention to this. Please find a copy of the HPS Dress Code Policy below:

I have been a dancer and dance teacher for the last 35 years concentrating in Musical Theatre and Contemporary Dance. I have choreographed for many studios around the New England area and have coached school dance teams for the last 12 years. I am so excited to start one here! Whether or not you have lots, little or no dance training- if you LOVE to dance- give it a try!
The team will meet on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in Room 9 from 2:45- 3:45. We will warm up, learn dance skills, and learn dance routines. Our goal is to have a Spring Recital for family and friends to come see our dance progression.

Our first meeting will be Tuesday, October 5th after school in room 9. During this meeting, I will go over all there is to know about the team. I will have permission slips forms for families to review and sign if this is something you would like your student to be a part of.

There is no cost to sign up and students should wear clothes you can dance in. I encourage all students, of all grades, to come check it out!

Hope to see you on the 5th!!!

CLASSROOM NEWS:

GRADE 5:

 Ms. Simes: Grade 5 Math/Science (Blue/Purple Group)
Welcome to JGW, our 5th grade families!  It has been a pleasure getting to know your students, while they become an important piece to our caring learning community. In math, students have created their interactive notebook or binder, they will need to have this everyday for class to keep them organized, as we move through math this year.  We will begin with “Topic 1 – Understand Place Value.”  Please make sure that your student comes to school with a fully charged Chromebook, we use these everyday.  Additionally, students will be using XtraMath to work on their math fact fluency, letters were sent home with your students for you to view.  Finally, students completed their Fall i-Ready Math Diagnostic, this data will assist myself and the math interventionist to focus on rigor and specific learning needs for your student.  In science, students have created their interactive binders, these will stay in class and will be an important tool to their learning science this year.  Our first unit is “Matter and Energy Flow In An Ecosystem, Scope 1 -Energy Transfer.” Students will wonder, “other than for heat, how do animals depend on the sun?”  This past week, students began with an engineering activity on the importance of collaboration to get a result, they needed to stack plastic cups into a pyramid using an elastic and string.  I will begin after school help after we get going into the curriculum- this will be Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 2:50 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at michele.simes@haverhill-ps.org.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms. Marciano: ELA – We will be starting our whole class read-aloud of “Fish in a Tree”. We will be focusing on central questions for each of the chapters. Students will also get the chance to collaborate with each other and discuss the book.

SOCIAL STUDIES – We will be reviewing the geography of the United States, how to read a map, and the importance of being a good citizen.

Ms. Hogan: I have loved getting to know so many awesome fifth graders so far this school year! This week in social studies, we previewed our first unit. Our first unit is about the European explorers. We will learn about why the explorers came to the Americas, what they did, and how they impacted the Native Americans. In order to preview the unit, we thought about what it would have been like to travel across the Atlantic Ocean on a boat 500 years ago. It did not sound like it would have been fun! Next week, we will be learning about who some of the explorers were, their routes, and the technological advances that helped them with traveling to the Americas. I am looking forward to a great school year!

Ms. LaCoste: Hello from grade 5 ELA (Red, Orange, Yellow, & Green groups)!  We’ve had a fantastic start to our 2021-2022 school year.  Students are adjusting to middle school life and the routines and procedures that help us be successful.  In class, we’ve worked on a couple of “get to know you” activities and I’ve truly enjoyed getting to know everyone.  We’ve also just started our first novel, “How to Steal a Dog.”  We’ll work on strengthening learned comprehension skills and developing new deeper thinking skills with this story.  Ask your student about the story.  Conversations about reading aid in your student’s understanding of the text.  I look forward to working with both students and parents throughout the year.  Don’t hesitate to email, write a note or call if you have any questions or concerns about your student.

Ms. Consolazio: I am so excited for the new school year and to be teaching fifth grade science.  My hope is to make science fun and engaging.  I like students to work in groups and learn doing hands on experiments.  There will also be doing more writing in science.  This is an MCAS science year and students will learn how to explain a subject by using claim, evidence, and reasoning.

In science, our first scope will be matter and energy flow in the ecosystem.  Students will learn about photosynthesis, potential, and kinetic energy.  Please make sure Chromebooks are charged at night. Chromebooks are utilized in classes daily.  If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me.  Marisa.consolazio@haverhill-ps.org

Mr. Kelly: Welcome to 5th Grade Math with Mr. Kelly! We have been working on setting up routines and getting familiar with the technology resources and games we will be using in class this past week. Next week, we will be beginning out first unit on Place Value. We will be learning about exponents, creating numbers from the millions to the thousandths and comparing and rounding those numbers. I’m excited to start our year of 5th Grade Math!

Ms. Lees: Our first two weeks of school have been wonderful getting to know each other in fifth grade. Work in ELA and Math with Orange and Green groups next week will focus on reading How to

Steal a Dog and Place Values along with focus on individual goals.

Ms. Blanchette: The first 2 weeks of school have come to a close and students have been getting into the routine and ready to learn this school year.

The 5th graders have been transitioning to middle school. They have been given locks and are comfortable switching classes now. Next week students will begin reading “Fish in a Tree” by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. In math students will begin using their interactive binders to learn our first topic!

I look forward to supporting students in math and ELA classes this year. If you have any questions please reach out to me via email at jacqueline.blanchette@haverhill-ps.org. I look forward to a great year!

GRADE 6:

Ms. Hamel: Happy New School Year!! I am enjoying getting to know all of our new students and am sure this is going to be a great year!

Please remind your student to charge their chromebooks each night. All grade six students received a “Home to School Folder” in their homeroom color. Be sure to check it for important information/paperwork.

ELA: We have begun our year preparing to read Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. In order to fully prepare for our new adventure- we are taking some time to learn about mythological gods/goddesses and Mount Olympus. We have been diving into Zeus’ family tree (quite interesting and a bit weird- ask your student about it!!). Each student has chosen a god/goddess to do a project on as well- I’m excited to see the final products. Students will be going home with weekly homework packets and some reading. Please check in with them to see that they are keeping up. THANK YOU!

SOCIAL STUDIES: We have begun our first lesson in Geography and Ancient Civilizations with “What do Historians Do” and why is learning about the past so important. We are getting our students prepared to start a journey across the world with our first stop in Asia where we will study our first humans. We are also going to learn about mapping and the importance of each unique culture around our amazing world.

Ms. Silveira: In science, we are beginning to learn about the different phases of the moon. We will be diving into the question of ‘What patterns are caused by the Earth, Sun, and Moon system?’ Next week in math, we will be using positive rational numbers. We will be reviewing how to add, subtract, and multiply decimals.

Mr. Taylor: ELA- Next week we will be starting our reading of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Students will also get their first weekly homework packet of the year that will be due on Fridays. We will be studying Greek Mythology and characters from the book to create our own images of those characters.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We have begun our first lesson in Geography and Ancient Civilizations with “What do Historians Do” and why is learning about the past so important. We are getting our students prepared to start a journey across the world with our first stop in Asia where we will study our first humans. Mathematics:  Last week, students completed their i-Ready Diagnostic and their Sixth Grade Readiness Diagnostic.  We are starting our first topic this week.  Students will learn to add and subtract decimals with precision; multiply decimals and use addition, subtraction, and multiplication of decimals to solve real-world problems

Ms. Lane: SCIENCE: The students are studying the first Unit about Earth’s place in the universe with “Earth, Sun and Moon Systems”. They begin by accessing their prior knowledge and may not understand that the Moon is visible during the day as well as at night. We will learn more about this by looking for the moon together during the day. They will also learn that the moon does not produce its own light and that it is only visible to us because it reflects light from the sun. We will use the Claim, Evidence and Reasoning Theory (CER) to investigate this system.

GRADE 7:

Mrs. Berthiaume: Welcome back, everyone!  I am looking forward to having an extraordinary year! In ELA, we will be using StudySync as our main text.  The program is found in the McGraw-Hill app in Classlink and students will be learning more about it soon. This week, we did a review of common and proper nouns, plus some editing practice. Students also wrote letters to me about what they like to read and write about.  In Social Studies, we’re going over the continents and oceans before we get started on our  Asia unit.  The McGraw-Hill app is where they will find their Social Studies text.  Also, students must bring a pencil/pen, notebook, folder, and a charged Chromebook to class each day.  Thank you for your support this school year!

Mrs. Trombly: Mrs. Trombly’s math classes are starting the week with integer work with rational numbers.  We will also be doing out Iready Diagnostic testing this week.  Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.  strombly@haverhill-ps.org

Mrs. MacKinnon: Good morning and welcome back 7th grade families.  Last week the kids did an activity where they were given 20 index cards and a meter of masking tape.  The kids worked together in groups of 3-4 and their goal was to build the tallest tower in 30 minutes.  The winning tower was almost 100 cm! Next week we are starting  right off in our Stemcopes curriculum with reproduction in both plant and animals.  Students will be focusing on characteristics of both plants and animals and how they use their features and behaviors to increase the chances of reproduction and survival in the wild.  Looking forward to a great year!

Ms. DiGloria: In Grade 7 Green and Blue ELA this upcoming week, students will be working on our first thematic unit: conflict. Students will learn about types of conflicts, self-reflect on their own conflicts over the past two years, and begin to read and engage with the story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling. In Social Studies, we will be continuing our study of South Asian geography by reading about monsoons and constructing our first short writing response. I will be sending weekly updates by email, so if you have not received an email from me (krista.digloria@haverhill-ps.org) by now, please reach out so I can rectify the issue. Thank you!

Mr. Auger: Hello everyone! This week in 7th grade science we started discussing our first unit of the year, reproduction of plants and animals.  Students were able to get outside and make their own scientific observations as we looked for evidence.  This upcoming week we will continue to expand our knowledge of this topic with interactive lessons as we learn the different strategies that plants and animals use to successfully reproduce.  In my 7th grade social studies class, we have begun to learn about the region of South Asia.  We will continue to learn about the geography and different cultures that can be found in this region as we move into next week.

Mr. Harris: (Blue and Green) students are going to be looking at their first unit on Rational Number Operations, which starts off with learning what a rational number is and relating it to its opposite.  We will then get into how to add and subtract integers, which is a big foundational skill students will need through the rest of their math careers.

Ms. Bilmazes: Welcome back and I hope you’ve all had a good start to the new school year! It’s great to see all the students returning to in-person learning. This year, I have the pleasure of working with Mrs. Kathy Holmes, a Merrimack College Fellow who is completing her graduate degree in Special Education.  Students spent two afternoons this week completing i-Ready diagnostics in ELA and Math.  Starting next week, we will be meeting  with those students who have pull-out support separately for the last 30 minutes of their ELA and/or Math classes.  In addition, students will receive support in the classroom from myself, Mrs. Holmes, and/or Ms. Credit.  Emails have been sent to the parents/guardians of the students for whom I am the liaison.  Feel free to reach out with any questions. Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms. Holmes: Hello Whittier Families! It was fun to meet so many parents and students at the JGW Open House. I am new to Whittier Middle School and will be working with Ms. Bilmazes as a Merrimack College intern in the seventh grade this year. Next week, I look forward to becoming better acquainted with each student and providing extra help and support in our classrooms. This weekend I am going to Maine to celebrate my Mom’s 90th birthday! I hope you have a chance to get out and enjoy our beautiful New England weather as well. I am very excited to be a part of the Whittier community and hope everyone has an awesome school year.

GRADE 8:

Mr. Lewis: 8th grade English is underway! Upon returning from Labor Day break, each class has begun their iReady diagnostic test. Everyone will have a chance to finish the test on Thursday, 9/8. Once iReady is completed, we will begin reading our first short story Flowers For Algernon. This story follows Charlie Gordon, a young man who undergoes a strange procedure.

Ms. Deblasis: Students were administered the i-Ready diagnostic test this past week.  It will be used as a tool for intervention groups, personalized instruction, and instructional resources.

We have started studying Topic 1: Real Numbers.  Specifically, we will be learning how to write rational numbers as decimals, understand irrational numbers, compare/order real numbers,

and evaluate/solve equations using square roots/cube roots.

Mr. Marinella: ELA– Hello all! Welcome back to a great year. In ELA we will be exploring all different kinds of stories and tales. To start the year, we begin by exploring Mysteries!! Dissecting them in order to understand how authors craft spooky and suspenseful accounts. This unit will go through the spookiest time of the year, October. We start with a look at Edgar Allen Poe and how he creates elements of fear and suspense in his writing, and what we can learn from it! We are also going to focus on writing about what we read. Taking info from one or multiple sources and using that help convey our ideas and thoughts will be a recurring thing in room 15! I also encourage all students to have an independent reading book with them. We have time dedicated to learning and reading what we want to! But this works best if your student shows up to class with that already decided.

Civics– Civics is all about understanding our government, where it came from, what it does, and how we can impact it. These main ideas will drive the entire year, but where do we start? To first understand our complex and confusing government, we must first go broad! This year will begin by understanding the very basic elements and pieces of government before looking at specific examples. We will be reading from great philosophers like Locke and Hobbes, and from major pieces of American history like The Declaration, Constitution, and Common Sense to build up our knowledge of government!

Ms. Sullivan: In 8th grade Science we will be starting the year with a unit on Astronomy. Next week we will be focusing on Earth’s Seasons. During these lessons we will be looking at models of the Earth at different times of the year, making diagrams, learning vocabulary, and doing readings about this topic. It has been a pleasure getting to know your children this week!

Mr. Harris: (Purple and Blue) we are diving into our first unit on Real Numbers.  Students will be working on turning repeating decimals into fractions, learning the difference between rational and irrational numbers, and will work on comparing and ordering real numbers.

Ms. MacKinnon: Good morning and welcome back 8th grade families.   Last week the kids did an activity where they were given 20 index cards and a meter of masking tape.  The kids worked together in groups of 3-4 and their goal was to build the tallest tower in 30 minutes.  The winning tower was almost 100 cm!  This week and for the next two weeks we will be doing astronomy in the science classes.  The students will begin by explaining the reason for the seasons, why we have seasons, and all about Earths tilt and its place in the universe.  Looking forward to a great year!

Ms. Senior: Welcome back to JG Whittier, all Grade 8 students and families; welcome also to newcomers.  Bar notation is a concept which is being explored by Mathematics students, along with repeating decimals and fractions via long division, and in English Language Arts, students are being given a snapshot of what to expect during the academic year. “When you write, I will write with you,” is Mr. Lewis’s mantra for students who have struggled in the past and/or present with writing. Observe, Think, Write!

Ms. Blanchette: The first 2 weeks of school have come to a close and students have been getting into the routine and ready to learn this school year.

Students in grade 8 are diving right into learning with a unit on the Mystery Genre in ELA. Students just read “A Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe and will continue to explore this genre through other pieces of literature that have mysteries. In math students are beginning to work with repeating numbers and rational numbers.

I look forward to supporting students in math and ELA classes this year. If you have any questions please reach out to me via email at jacqueline.blanchette@haverhill-ps.org. I look forward to a great year!
