MASKS: As we continue to adhere to the Massachusetts’s State Mandate that all people (students, staff, visitors) are required to wear a mask in the school building, we ask that you please send your student’s to school with a spare mask. Many students have been breaking their masks and need new one’s throughout the school day. We would appreciate families sending students with an extra mask each day. Thank you!
LOST & FOUND: Our lost & found is full of clothing. If your student is missing anything, please have them take a look!
Chromebooks: PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR STUDENT IS COMING TO SCHOOL DAILY WITH THEIR CHROMEBOOKS FULLY CHARGED. THANK YOU!!
JGW Chromebook Policy
We understand that “things happen” and from time-to-time students will forget to charge their Chromebook or leave it at home. Unfortunately, this is becoming a habit for some students and is happening far too often overall. Students were made aware at the beginning of the school year that the expectation is for ALL students to bring their fully-charged Chromebook to school each day.
The supply of extra Chromebooks is limited. Because of this, we are implementing a borrowing policy here at JGW for Chromebooks and chargers. Students who forget their Chromebooks, bring them to school uncharged, or do not return a borrowed Chromebook the same day will be given consequences as follows:
First Offense: Student will be issued a warning
Second Offense: Parents/Guardians will be called
Third Offense or More: Student will be given after-school detention
**These consequences will reset for all students each trimester.
If a student loses or damages a Chromebook or charger and the student needs to be issued another device, the family will be charged a fee for the replacement. Typically, the Chromebook replacement fee will be $199.00 and the charger replacement fee will be $39.00.
It is very important for students to come to school with charged and functioning Chromebooks. The devices are used in most, if not all classes; including music and art. We are asking families to be partners with the JGW in this, and remind your children to charge their Chromebooks and bring them to school every day.
Attendance: A reminder to all families that if your student will be absent for the day, please make sure to call the main office (978-374-5782) to notify the school. Thank you.
Dress Code: Please be aware that students are not allowed to wear pajamas or pajama pants to school. We receive many questions about our school’s dress code. We would ask that all families please review the Haverhill Public Schools Dress Code Policy with their students in order to ensure that it is properly being followed. Thank you for your attention to this. Please find a copy of the HPS Dress Code Policy below: Dress Code Policy (HPS)

Extra help will be offered after school on Tuesday until 3:30. Have a great week. Happy Holidays!
GRADE 6:
Ms. Hamel: SS: We continue to research Ancient Egypt. We have delved into their burial rituals and the purpose of the pyramids. Students are learning about the afterlife beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians and understanding why their code of ethics while here on Earth were so important. Students are also wrapping up their research on King Tutankhamun (Tut) and polishing their CSI briefs on which theory of King Tut’s death makes the most sense to them.
ELA: Students are working on Themes within short stories. Using Aesop’s Fables, students are coming up with what they think is the Theme and how this theme is woven throughout the story. Students are also working with one another to create their own Fable and their own sense of morals and values to create a theme within their own story. I look forward to reading them!
We will spend our last week of class before break watching the Percy Jackson movie and creating Venn Diagram posters citing the similarities and differences between the movie and the book.
Homeroom Students in Room 9 will celebrate the Winter Break with a pajama and hot cocoa party on our half day, December 23rd…Excited for a week of fun with my room 9 elves!

I hope everyone has a great Christmas break and gets some much needed rest, and relaxation. See you all in 2022!!
Ms. DiGloria: We made it to the holiday break! For those who celebrate, I hope you have a wonderful holiday. For those who do not, please still enjoy some rest and relaxation with your family and friends. In Grade 7 Blue and Green groups next week, students will be finishing up projects (a movie poster project in ELA and their choice menu activities in SS), and practicing some reading and writing skills using task card games. Students will also have an opportunity to catch up on missing work if necessary. Please check your student’s grades on the portal and encourage them to turn in late work, as necessary. It is early in the term and its best to keep on top of assignments as best as possible. Happy New Year to all!
Mr. Auger: Hello Everyone! This week in my 7th grade science class, students began learning about the water cycle. Classes this week have introduced the three major components of the water cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation. Students will expand their knowledge of the water cycle as we move into next week and we will conclude next week with a quiz before the holiday break. In my 7th grade social studies class, we finished up an East Asia travel magazine project and began our next unit, Imperial China. Have a great weekend!
Mr. Harris: Blue – students are working on generating equivalent expressions. This unit started with combining like terms and has transitioned into the distributive property and will then move into factoring expressions. Students will use this knowledge to help simplify expressions, and it lays a needed foundation for many future topics.
Green – students are wrapping up their look at combining like terms, the distributive property, and factoring expressions. As they finish out this unit, students will learn to add and subtract entire expressions from each other, and analyze equivalent expressions for their meaning in different formats/contexts.
Ms. Bilmazes & Ms. Holmes: Mrs. Holmes and I have been meeting, during the success block, with those students who have pull-out support in Math and ELA. This time is spent working on a variety of interventions, such as iReady, additional practice, help with homework and classwork support. In addition, students are receiving support in the classroom from myself, Mrs. Holmes, and/or Ms. Credit. In ELA, students are continuing with the Highs and Lows unit in StudySync. In the Blue group, the students completed reading “A Christmas Carol” and are completing a summative project for Unit 2. In Orange and Yellow groups, the students have finished reading “A Christmas Carol”, interspersed with watching scenes from the movie. In addition, they worked on creating what a sweater for Scrooge would look like. In Math, students are working on 3.3: addition and subtraction worksheets. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season!

Civics- Civics class has moved into a very important part of the year (even though I think all of Civics is important), called the Action Civics Project. This is a chance for students to find something they are passionate about and think critically about how they can use this focus area to help their community. This project will span the rest of the 8th grade year and will be done in several steps. Ask your student what they care about and how they believe they can create real and meaningful change!
Ms. Sullivan: This week in science we will learn how to interpret data to describe the role that human activities have played in causing the rise in global temperatures over the past century. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Mr. Blaustein: We are taking our first quiz on Ch 4 Lesson 1 on Thursday and Friday this week. We are finishing up a look at the Supreme Court case of Tinker v. Des Moines focusing on Students First Amendment rights. We will begin Ch 4 Lesson 2 Other Bill of Rights Protections to take us up to Christmas vacation.
Mr. Harris: Blue & Purple – students have transitioned from solving equations, to working with linear equations. This part of our learning is dedicated to looking at the constant of proportionality – more commonly called slope. Students will gain an understanding of what slope is and how to find it from a graph, table, or equation. Students will work toward writing their own equations in slope-intercept form.
Ms. MacKinnon: The 8th graders are finishing up global warming and renewable and non renewable resources. They have learned that carbo dioxide has increased due to human activity and hopefully will remember the lessons going forward into the future. When we get back from break we will begin chemistry. Hope everyone has a great break and see you all in 2022!!

Student Support Coordinator (Mr. Newell): I am available to help support students and their families in any way possible. Please email me with any questions, thank you.
Student Adjustment Counselor (Ms. Midolo): This week we worked on “Enabling vs. Supporting”. Enabling means taking steps that inadvertently reinforce avoidance of discomfort. Enabling occurs when we allow others to completely avoid uncomfortable situations, provide excessive reassurance, “rescue” students when they feel distress, or provide short-term fixes that are consistent with steps to making long-term progress.
Supporting facilitates or empowers others to take steps toward facing their fears.
Student Adjustment Counselor (Ms. White): Groups and individual counseling continue to go well as we continue to focus on making positive and safe decisions for ourselves and others. As we head into the busy holiday season, we are focusing on taking care of ourselves and different ways to manage stress! Students continue to develop different coping strategies and techniques to combat stress and anxiety.
Middle School Support Program (Mrs. Leydon & Mr. Diffin): A reminder that the school offers homework help every morning in the art room from 8:05-8:25.
