Hello JGW Families,
I hope that everyone enjoyed a lot of Family, Friends, Food, and Football this Thanksgiving weekend!! Now I hope that everyone is dusting off those shovels and snowblowers to address the first snow storm of the season. Please see below for important news/information happening at and around JGW this week:
IMPORTANT INFO/NEWS:
COLD WEATHER: The snow is finally here, and it will be cold from now until spring. With that being said, we kindly ask that you send your students to school prepared with jackets, hats, and gloves. We will make every attempt to take the students outside for recess each day if possible. This includes if there is snow on the ground and if it is cold. It is important that all students are prepared to bundle up. The rules with the snow are that students are not allowed to pick up and throw/kick snow at each other. Students are also not allowed to climb on snow piles and are encouraged to stay off of any ice in order to prevent injury. It would be greatly appreciated if parents reviewed these rules with their students. In the case that there is indoor recess due to the cold/weather, all students are to remain in their homerooms for the duration of their recess period.
ATTENDANCE: The first step to being successful in school is to show up to school daily! With the weather becoming cold and snowy, we recognize that it is more difficult to get out of bed and to school daily on time. It is imperative that students are still doing so. If you are having difficulty getting your student to school daily on time, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mr. Betty, Mrs. Vlahos, or Mrs. Midolo for support. Attendance letters will be mailed home to students who have missed 4-6 days as a reminder of the importance of being in school consistently. If a student misses 7 or more school days, a letter will be mailed to set up an attendance meeting with the school to discuss what support is needed and a plan for success moving forward. Please make every attempt to send your student to school each day, and if they do need to be out of school due to illness, please make sure doctor’s notes are shared with our main office. Thank you!
SITE COUNCIL: Our next Site Council meeting will be held this Wednesday, 12/4 from 5-6pm in our conference room.
PTO: Our next PTO meeting will be held this Wednesday, 12/4 from 6-7:30pm in room 10. New members are always welcome!
REPORT CARDS AND PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES: First trimester report cards will be issued on Monday, 12/9 and our Parent/Teacher conferences will take place on Thursday, 12/12 from 6-7:30pm.
NO SHAVE NOVEMBER: We would like to thank all students and families who donated to No Shave November. We were able to raise a few hundred dollars to donate to cancer research. We also have a staff member who was the clear cut (no pun intended) winner! Please stay tuned for who that is, and what embarrassing thing he will be doing! The students will be made aware at school when they return from Thanksgiving break.
SPORTS NEWS:
GIRL’S BASKETBALL: It is a busy week for our basketball teams. There is a game scheduled for Tuesday, 12/3 to be played at Consentino. The girls will be playing 2nd. The girls will also have practice from 3-5pm on Wednesday 12/4. Finally there will also be a home game versus Sacred Hearts on Thursday, 12/5. The girls will be playing 1st on Thursday.
BOY’S BASKETBALL: The boys will start their week with a game at Consentino on Tuesday, 12/3 in which they will be playing first. There will then be a game hosted by JGW versus Sacred Hearts on Thursday, 12/5 in which they will be playing the second game. They will end their week with practice on Friday, 12/6 from 3-5pm after school.
CHEERLEADING: The cheerleaders will be practicing after school on Wednesday 12/4 from 3-5pm. They will also be participating and supporting our basketball teams on Tuesday, 12/3 at Consentino and home versus Sacred Hearts on Thursday, 12/5.
CLUB NEWS:
BAND: The Whittier Band will be performing their concert alongside Nettle on Tuesday, December 10th at 6:30pm in the Nettle Cafeteria. Admission is free.
YEARBOOK COMMITTEE: Any 8th grade student interested in being on the yearbook committee should attend a meeting Tuesday, December 10th after school until 3:30 in Room 19.
JR VIP: There will be a JR VIP meeting on Wednesday, 12/4 after school from 2:45-3:45pm in the art room.
MODEL UN: Model UN members should be finishing up their third paragraph (and paper) by Monday, December 2nd so they can be sent for review. Our conference dates (12/10 and 12/11) are quickly approaching so we will be wrapping things up and getting debate ready during the December meetings.
SCHOOL NEWS: The Poet is on sale at all lunches for $0.25 each.
CHORUS: Chorus meets every Tuesday after school from 2:45 – 4:00pm. This Tuesday we will meet until 4:30 to practice for our upcoming concert.
WINTER CONCERT 2019: Mr. Gariepy is pleased to announce that JGW will be having our 2nd Annual Winter Concert on Friday, December 20th 2018 at 1:30pm in the Gymnasium. The Winter Concert is a very fun and exciting event that will include selections from the J.G. Whittier Middle School Chorus, songs from yesterday’s and today’s radio stations, and even performances from the JGW Cheer Squad led by Ms. Beckwith! GUIDANCE/NURSING NEWS:
-To all 7th grade families, please see the letter that went home on Friday from the school nurse and school counselor regarding the SBIRT screening. On Monday, December 9th, grade 7 students will meet briefly for a confidential screening. We will use the CRAFFT II screening tool, the most commonly used substance use screening tool for adolescents. All screenings will be held in private one-on-one sessions with one of the nurses or counselors. Students who are not using substances will have their healthy choices reinforced. When any student reports using alcohol or other drugs, or seems at risk for future substance use, the screener will ask 5 more questions, provide brief feedback and have a brief conversation with that student. If you have any questions, please reach out to Kelsey Cartwright- school nurse, or Jacquie Vlahos- school counselor.

¡Espero que todos hayan disfrutado mucho de la familia, los amigos, la comida y el fútbol este fin de semana de Acción de Gracias! Ahora espero que todos estén desempolvando esas palas y quitanieves para enfrentar la primera tormenta de nieve de la temporada. INFORMACIÓN IMPORTANTE / NOTICIAS:
CLIMA FRÍO: La nieve finalmente está aquí, y hará frío desde ahora hasta la primavera. Dicho esto, le pedimos amablemente que envíe a sus estudiantes a la escuela preparados con chaquetas, sombreros y guantes. Haremos todo lo posible para llevar a los estudiantes al recreo todos los días si es posible. Esto incluye si hay nieve en el suelo y si hace frío. Es importante que todos los estudiantes estén preparados para abrigarse. Las reglas con la nieve son que a los estudiantes no se les permite levantarse y tirarse / patearse nieve unos a otros. Tampoco se les permite a los estudiantes trepar sobre montones de nieve y se les anima a mantenerse alejados de cualquier hielo para evitar lesiones. Sería muy apreciado si los padres revisaran estas reglas con sus estudiantes. En el caso de que haya un recreo en el interior debido al frío / clima, todos los estudiantes deben permanecer en sus aulas durante el período de recreo.
ASISTENCIA: ¡El primer paso para tener éxito en la escuela es presentarse a la escuela todos los días! Con el clima frío y nevoso, reconocemos que es más difícil levantarse de la cama y ir a la escuela todos los días a tiempo. Es imperativo que los estudiantes sigan haciéndolo. Si tiene dificultades para llevar a su estudiante a la escuela todos los días a tiempo, no dude en comunicarse con el Sr. Betty, la Sra. Vlahos o la Sra. Midolo para obtener ayuda. Las cartas de asistencia se enviarán por correo a los estudiantes que hayan faltado de 4 a 6 días como recordatorio de la importancia de estar en la escuela constantemente. Si un estudiante pierde 7 o más días escolares, se enviará una carta por correo para programar una reunión de asistencia con la escuela para discutir qué apoyo se necesita y un plan para el éxito en el futuro. Haga todo lo posible para enviar a su hijo a la escuela todos los días, y si necesita estar fuera de la escuela debido a una enfermedad, asegúrese de compartir las notas del médico con nuestra oficina principal. ¡Gracias!
CONSEJO DEL SITIO: Nuestra próxima reunión del Consejo del Sitio se llevará a cabo este miércoles, 12/4 de 5-6pm en nuestra sala de conferencias.

TARJETAS DE INFORME Y CONFERENCIAS DE PADRES / MAESTROS: Las boletas de calificaciones del primer trimestre se emitirán el lunes 12/9 y nuestras conferencias de padres / maestros se llevarán a cabo el jueves 12/12 de 6-7: 30pm.
NO AFEITAR NOVIEMBRE: Nos gustaría agradecer a todos los estudiantes y familias que donaron a No Shave November. Pudimos recaudar unos cientos de dólares para donar a la investigación del cáncer. ¡También tenemos un miembro del personal que fue el ganador claro (sin juego de palabras)! ¡Estén atentos a quién es y qué cosa vergonzosa hará! Los estudiantes serán informados en la escuela cuando regresen de las vacaciones de Acción de Gracias.
NOTICIAS DEPORTIVAS:
BALONCESTO DE NIÑA: Es una semana ocupada para nuestros equipos de baloncesto. Hay un juego programado para el martes 12/3 que se jugará en Consentino. Las niñas jugarán 2do. Las chicas también tendrán práctica de 3-5pm el miércoles 12/4. Finalmente también habrá un juego en casa contra Sacred Hearts el jueves 12/5. Las niñas jugarán primero el jueves.
BALONCESTO DE NIÑO: Los niños comenzarán su semana con un juego en Consentino el martes 12/3 en el que jugarán primero. Luego habrá un juego organizado por JGW contra Sacred Hearts el jueves 12/5 en el que jugarán el segundo juego. Terminarán su semana con práctica el viernes 12/6 de 3-5pm después de la escuela.
ANIMADORAS: Las animadoras estarán practicando después de la escuela el miércoles 12/4 de 3-5pm. También participarán y apoyarán a nuestros equipos de baloncesto el martes 12/3 en Consentino y en casa contra Sacred Hearts el jueves 12/5.
NOTICIAS DEL CLUB:
BANDA: The Whittier Band presentará su concierto junto a Nettle el martes 10 de diciembre a las 6:30 pm en la cafetería Nettle. La admisión es gratuita.
COMITÉ DEL ANUARIO: Cualquier estudiante de octavo grado interesado en formar parte del comité del anuario debe asistir a una reunión el martes 10 de diciembre después de la escuela hasta las 3:30 en el salón 19.
JR VIP: Habrá una reunión JR VIP el miércoles 12/4 después de la escuela de 2: 45-3: 45pm en el salón de arte.
MODELO ONU: Los miembros modelo de la ONU deben terminar su tercer párrafo (y su documento) antes del lunes 2 de diciembre para que puedan ser enviados a revisión. Las fechas de nuestra conferencia (12/10 y 12/11) se acercan rápidamente, por lo que terminaremos las cosas y prepararemos el debate durante las reuniones de diciembre.
NOTICIAS ESCOLARES : El Poeta está a la venta en todos los almuerzos por $ 0.25 cada uno.
CORO: El coro se reúne todos los martes después de la escuela de 2:45 a 4:00 pm. Este martes nos reuniremos hasta las 4:30 para practicar en nuestro próximo concierto.
CONCIERTO DE INVIERNO 2019 : El Sr. Gariepy se complace en anunciar que JGW tendrá nuestro segundo concierto anual de invierno el viernes 20 de diciembre de 2018 a la 1:30 pm en el gimnasio. El concierto de invierno es un evento muy divertido y emocionante que incluirá selecciones del Coro de la Escuela Intermedia JG Whittier, canciones de las estaciones de radio de ayer y de hoy, ¡e incluso actuaciones del Escuadrón de JGW Cheer dirigido por la Sra. GUÍA / NOTICIAS DE ENFERMERÍA:
-Para todas las familias de 7º grado, vea la carta que se envió a casa el viernes de la enfermera y el consejero escolar con respecto a la evaluación SBIRT. El lunes 9 de diciembre, los estudiantes de séptimo grado se reunirán brevemente para una evaluación confidencial. Utilizaremos la herramienta de detección CRAFFT II, la herramienta de detección de uso de sustancias más utilizada para adolescentes. Todas las evaluaciones se realizarán en sesiones privadas uno a uno con una de las enfermeras o consejeros. Los estudiantes que no usan sustancias tendrán sus elecciones saludables reforzadas. Cuando cualquier estudiante informa que usa alcohol u otras drogas, o parece estar en riesgo de usar sustancias en el futuro, el evaluador hará 5 preguntas más, brindará comentarios breves y mantendrá una breve conversación con ese estudiante.
