IMPORTANT NEWS/INFO:
WINTER CONCERT 2019: Mr. Gariepy is pleased to announce that JGW will be having our 2nd Annual Winter Concert on Friday, December 20th 2018 at 1:30pm in the Gymnasium. The Winter Concert is a very fun and exciting event that will include selections from the J.G. Whittier Middle School Chorus, songs from yesterday’s and today’s radio stations, and even performances from the JGW Cheer Squad led by Ms. Beckwith! GCP NEWS: I would like to congratulate Grade 5 for winning the Good Citizenship Prize for the month of November. This is their second win in three months! I would also like to take a moment to recognize and congratulate the following students for being named Good Citizen’s of the Month for November: Gr. 5 – Joseph Andrade, Avery Borden, William Ciardiello, Jeremy Silverio-Gomez. Gr. 6 – Anthony Del Rossi, Taylor LaRoche, Aneida Ortega, Lacey Stewart. Gr. 7 – Elijah Gonzalez, Gabrielle Striker, Kleisa Prifti, Israel V. Santiago. Gr. 8 – Aiden Menzie, Jiany Fuentes, Shaylee Frederick, Argelis Estevez.
PTO: The next PTO meeting will be on Wednesday, 1/8/20 at 6pm.
The PTO is forming a library committee and a STEM closet committee to help organize and purchase materials. If you are interested in joining, please e-mail jgwhittierpto@yahoo.com.
SITE COUNCIL: The next Site Council meeting will be on Wednesday, 1/8/20 from 5-6pm.
COMMUNICATION: Please remember that you can reach out to your student’s teachers whenever you want an update, or have questions or concerns. It is our policy that teachers will respond to any email communication within 24 hours. If you do not hear back from staff within that time, please contact the main office.
COLD WEATHER: The snow, ice, and wind is here, and it will be cold from now until spring. With that being said, we kindly ask that you send your students to school prepared with jackets, hats, and gloves. We will make every attempt to take the students outside for recess each day if possible. This includes if there is snow on the ground and if it is cold. It is important that all students are prepared to bundle up. The rules with the snow are that students are not allowed to pick up and throw/kick snow at each other. Students are also not allowed to climb on snow piles and are encouraged to stay off of any ice in order to prevent injury. It would be greatly appreciated if parents reviewed these rules with their students. In the case that there is indoor recess due to the cold/weather, all students are to remain in their homerooms for the duration of their recess period.
ATTENDANCE: The first step to being successful in school is to show up to school daily! With the weather becoming cold and snowy, we recognize that it is more difficult to get out of bed and to school daily on time. It is imperative that students are still doing so. If you are having difficulty getting your student to school daily on time, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mr. Betty, Mrs. Vlahos, or Mrs. Midolo for support. Attendance letters will be mailed home to students who have missed 4-6 days as a reminder of the importance of being in school consistently. If a student misses 7 or more school days, a letter will be mailed to set up an attendance meeting with the school to discuss what support is needed and a plan for success moving forward. Please make every attempt to send your student to school each day, and if they do need to be out of school due to illness, please make sure doctor’s notes are shared with our main office. Thank you!

SPELLING BEE: There will be a school wide spelling bee on, Monday, Jan. 13, at 9 AM in the gym.
SPORTS NEWS:
GIRL’S BASKETBALL: Come join the girls this week as they will be busy playing 3 games! They will play @Hunking on Tuesday 12/17 (Girls playing first), @Consentino on Wednesday 12/18 (Boys playing first), and then home vs. Consentino on Thursday, 12/19 (Girls playing first).
BOY’S BASKETBALL: The boy’s basketball team will practice after school on Monday, 12/16 from 3-5pm to prepare for their multiple games this week to include @Hunking on Tuesday 12/17 (Girls playing first), @Consentino on Wednesday 12/18 (Boys playing first), and then home vs. Consentino on Thursday, 12/19 (Girls playing first).
CHEERLEADING: The cheerleaders will be practicing after school on Monday, 12/16 from 3-6pm. They will also be traveling with the basketball teams to Hunking on Tuesday, 12/17, Consentino on Wednesday 12/18, and hosting Consentino on Thursday, 12/19 to help support the Poets!
CLUB NEWS:
ACADEMIC BOWL: There will be Academic bowl tryouts on Tuesday, 12/17 & Wednesday, 12/18 after school. If a student cannot make it, they will need to see Ms. MacKinnon during their lunch/recess or Mr. K during their tech period.
SCHOOL NEWS: The Poet is on sale at all lunches for $0.25 each.
CHORUS: Chorus meets every Tuesday after school from 2:45 – 4:00pm.
CRAFT CLUB: Craft Club will meet Wednesday 12.18.19 @ 2:45 in the Art room.
JR VIP: Jr VIP will be having a Christmas party and meeting on Wednesday, December 18th after school in the library. Don’t forget that Yankee Swap gift. See Mrs. Reynolds for details, AND all permission slips forms for the field trip are due Monday, 12/16.

CONCIERTO DE INVIERNO 2019 : El Sr. Gariepy se complace en anunciar que JGW tendrá nuestro segundo concierto anual de invierno el viernes 20 de diciembre de 2018 a la 1:30 pm en el gimnasio. CONSEJO DEL SITIO: La próxima reunión del Consejo del sitio será el miércoles, 1/8/20 de 5-6pm.
COMUNICACIÓN: Recuerde que puede comunicarse con los maestros de su estudiante cuando desee una actualización o si tiene preguntas o inquietudes. Es nuestra política que los maestros respondan a cualquier comunicación por correo electrónico dentro de las 24 horas. Si no recibe respuesta del personal dentro de ese tiempo, comuníquese con la oficina principal.
CLIMA FRÍO: La nieve, el hielo y el viento están aquí, y hará frío desde ahora hasta la primavera. Dicho esto, le pedimos amablemente que envíe a sus estudiantes a la escuela preparados con chaquetas, sombreros y guantes. Haremos todo lo posible para llevar a los estudiantes al recreo todos los días si es posible. Esto incluye si hay nieve en el suelo y si hace frío. Es importante que todos los estudiantes estén preparados para abrigarse. Las reglas con la nieve son que a los estudiantes no se les permite levantarse y tirarse / patearse nieve unos a otros. Tampoco se les permite a los estudiantes trepar sobre montones de nieve y se les recomienda mantenerse alejados de cualquier hielo para evitar lesiones. Sería muy apreciado si los padres revisaran estas reglas con sus estudiantes. En el caso de que haya un receso en el interior debido al frío / clima, todos los estudiantes deben permanecer en sus salones durante el período de recreo.
ASISTENCIA: ¡El primer paso para tener éxito en la escuela es presentarse a la escuela todos los días! Con el clima frío y nevoso, reconocemos que es más difícil levantarse de la cama y ir a la escuela todos los días a tiempo. Es imperativo que los estudiantes sigan haciéndolo. Si tiene dificultades para llevar a su estudiante a la escuela todos los días a tiempo, no dude en comunicarse con el Sr. Betty, la Sra. Vlahos o la Sra. Midolo para obtener ayuda. Las cartas de asistencia se enviarán por correo a los estudiantes que hayan faltado de 4 a 6 días como recordatorio de la importancia de estar en la escuela constantemente. Si un estudiante pierde 7 o más días escolares, se enviará una carta por correo para programar una reunión de asistencia con la escuela para discutir qué apoyo se necesita y un plan para el éxito en el futuro. Haga todo lo posible para enviar a su hijo a la escuela todos los días, y si necesita estar fuera de la escuela debido a una enfermedad, asegúrese de compartir las notas del médico con nuestra oficina principal. ¡Gracias!
NOTICIAS ACADEMICAS:
CONCURSO DE ORTOGRAFÍA: Habrá un concurso de ortografía en toda la escuela el lunes 13 de enero a las 9 AM en el gimnasio.
Los estudiantes tendrán abejas de ortografía en clase durante sus períodos de ELA antes del 13 de enero para determinar quién competirá. El ganador de la abeja escolar pasa al campeonato regional y, a partir de ahí, ¡ese ganador compite en el Scripps National Spelling Bee en Washington, DC, en la primavera!
Los maestros de ELA anunciarán sus abejas en el aula pronto.
NOTICIAS DEPORTIVAS:
BALONCESTO DE NIÑA: ¡Únete a las chicas esta semana ya que estarán ocupadas jugando 3 juegos! Jugarán @Hunking el martes 12/17 (Las niñas juegan primero), @Consentino el miércoles 12/18 (Los niños juegan primero), y luego en casa contra Consentino el jueves, 12/19 (Las niñas juegan primero).
BALONCESTO DE NIÑO: El equipo de baloncesto del niño practicará después de la escuela el lunes 12/16 de 3-5pm para prepararse para sus múltiples juegos esta semana para incluir @Hunking el martes 12/17 (Las niñas juegan primero), @Consentino el miércoles 12/18 (Niños jugando primero), y luego a casa contra Consentino el jueves 19/12 (las niñas juegan primero).

TAZA ACADÉMICA: Habrá pruebas académicas académicas el martes 12/17 y el miércoles 12/18 después de la escuela. Si un estudiante no puede asistir, deberá ver a la Sra. MacKinnon durante su almuerzo / recreo o al Sr. K durante su período de tecnología.
