FAMILY ENGAGEMENT SURVEY: Please don’t forget you still have a chance to fill out our survey (the link below)..

We would be greatly appreciative if you took a couple of minutes to fill out this brief survey which is attached to share your thoughts, and have your voice heard with both concerns and ideas for our school moving forward.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdftx5QwXs79JXSBp5PahRZwgrPsALnlLNrH5m_q0np_1Yj6Q/viewform?usp=sf_link

We continue to be in this together, and want to support all of our students in the best way possible. Hearing from you is an integral piece of this puzzle. We thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this survey.

Take care and be safe!

I-READY DIAGNOSTIC:  On Tuesday January 19 and Thursday, January 21 our students will be taking their second iReady Diagnostic.  iReady is one of the tools that the school uses to measure student progress throughout the year. This tool helps us best support all students by determining where they excel and where they need improvement. Students will login to iReady during homeroom and will work until they complete the assessment.  Students do not receive a grade for iReady, however their scores help us to decide what types of interventions and supports to provide.  All students are expected to complete this diagnostic.  Please make sure that your student has logged into iReady on the 19th (reading) and 21st (math).  We will be calling families if students are not logged in and participating.  Thank you for your support in gathering important information about all of our students!

School Pictures: Please remember that school pictures can be picked up in the office any day from 8:30 – 3:30?

ATTENDANCE:

My Attendance/Participation Success Plan

POSSIBLE STRATEGIES FOR GOOD ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION

Please review the list and choose strategies that fit your daily schedule.

  • I will make attending and participating in school every day a priority.
  • I will post my class schedule of classes and log-in information in a visible location near my desk or on the refrigerator.
  • I will set alarms / alerts to remind myself to wake up on time and participate in classes.
  • I will try to find a quiet place at home where I can participate in class and complete my school work. If I cannot, I will ask my school or community organization if they have a safe place where I can study and log into class.
  • I will keep track of my attendance and absences.
  • I will find a relative, friend or neighbor who can help me resolve a problem keeping me from attending or participating in school.
  • If I am absent, I will contact my teachers to find out what I missed.
  • I will keep healthy by wearing a mask, as needed, and getting a flu shot.
  • I will set up non-sick medical and dental appointments for weekdays after school. If I must make a non-urgent medical appointment during the school day, I will try to attend school for the majority of the day.
  • When I am struggling with a challenge that is keeping me from attending or participating in school I will confide in an adult at school and seek help.
  • ATTENDANCE POLICY AND EXPECTATIONS: Here is a reminder of our attendance policy. In this new model of schooling where students are learning from both school and home, attendance and participation in all classes is one of our major concerns. Here are some things to know and we would greatly appreciate it if you reviewed all of these expectations and policies with your students:
  • If you are absent for 10% of the school year, you are considered to be “chronically” absent. That means that if you have missed 4 or more days to this point.
  • We have begun reaching out via mail with attendance letters for students that we are currently concerned are missing too much time.
  • It is the expectation that all students are either present physically or signed on remotely at 8:30am each day.
  • It is the requirement that students attend all of their classes for the duration of the class time. Leaving a meet/class early is equivalent to walking out of class without permission.
  • In addition to sending home letters, we will also be setting up attendance meetings with students and families to address concerns and lend support, and in some cases we will be conducting home visits to do this as well.
  • The first step toward school success is attendance. You cannot be successful in school if you are not showing up. Please reach out to us so that we can set up a plan to best support you and your student(s).
  • Please note that while it is good practice to make your student’s homeroom teacher aware of any absences or appointments, it is most important that you are contacting the main office of the school each and any time that your student is going to be absent. Also, please make sure to forward all doctor’s notes and other absent notes to our main office. Thank you!
  • Wi-Fi Issues: If you are having WiFi issues at home and your student cannot log onto a Google Meet at the moment, please email the teacher or call the school so an office staff member can pass the info onto the teacher. Teachers take attendance every period and when a student does not show up for class, they don’t necessarily know that the student is having a tech issue.

Social Studies- We are learning about the Civil Rights movement with Monday being Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Students have been participating in several spirited conversations and learning about people such as MLK, Jr., Ruby Bridges, Malcom X and others. We are using various forms of literature and media to learn the material.

All-Star: Rosangelie Jimenez (Yellow)

Mrs. LaCoste: This week in grade 5 ELA we are continuing to deepen our understanding of nonfiction texts.  We’re preparing to read a book about the history of doughnuts.  The students all seem pretty enthusiastic about the topic!  We’re reviewing features within the book that help students understand the content better (such as headings and subheadings, textboxes, bullet points, glossary, and index).

I will be reviewing this week’s homework assignment tomorrow.  From now until the end of the year, students will be expected to read for a total of 20 minutes each night (Mon-Thurs) and write a very short entry about what they read.  Students who don’t have access to books can use online reading materials.  I’ve reviewed where they can find this.  Please let me know if you have any questions regarding homework.

In Orange SS, we’re completing our DBQ!  Students have worked really hard to gather information from historical documents, form an opinion, and write a 5 paragraph essay about the benefits and consequences of European Exploration.  I’ve been really impressed with their conversation and insight surrounding this topic.  Next week, we will begin chapter 4 of our text- “The Road to War.”

Ms. Lees: Miss Kelly and Miss Lees are proud of the students’ hard work writing their DBQs, CERS, and completing Math and ELA tests. It was a really productive week. We hope everyone has a nice three day weekend and you are able to take the opportunity to think about the holiday in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and all he did to be grateful for. Don’t forget to work on your LexiaCore 5 reading if you have an account. And, remember to set up times for help before school or after school if you have fallen behind and need help with your work.

GRADE 6:

Mrs. Hamel: Grade 6 will be taking some time for students to take their winter assessments in IReady, both in ELA and Math- keep your eyes open for an email to all grade 6 families further explaining this assessment and student expectations. We just know our students will tackle this with the perseverance they have been showing all  year!

In Science, we will continue working on Mechanical Waves and how they move through mediums to transfer energy. Our students have taken a deeper look from ocean waves to sound waves and even studied if it is possible to break glass with sound!

In Social Studies, our students will take a pause on Africa to study Civil Rights, those inspirational central figures who brought them about, and our own personal ties to Civil Rights within our own country and community.

Mr. Taylor: ELA- Tuesday we have our I-Ready mid-year diagnostic. Make sure you get plenty of rest to show up ready to show us your progress! We continue on in our novel, Ghost, to see what happens to our main character after he continued to make some poor decisions and discuss his character development as he tries to maintain his place on his new team despite some trouble. We’ll also be working on some grammar practice to smooth out some rough edges in our writing process.

Ms. Sargent: In math our students will be finishing up work on Coordinate Planes and moving on to expressions and equations.

Mrs. Guisti: Mrs. Guisti and Mrs. Cronin’s online support class has been busy reviewing vocabulary and assignments for this week.  In ELA our students have been using multiple online reading platforms such as iReady, Lexia, and Read Live.  In math, we completed our lessons in coordinate planes and finding distance between coordinates.  Please keep coming to our 12:05 class for support and/or daily check ins.  Thank you Grade 6!!

GRADE 7:

Mrs. Berthiaume: In Social Studies, we are studying early China and learning about Confucius’s very important sayings, which don’t just apply to that era, but even today.  In ELA, students had the chance to view the scenes they read aloud (in class) on screen when we watched some of the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol starring Alistair Sim as Scrooge (My personal favorite!).  Students did a fantastic job on their Google Drawing portraits of characters from the story and extracting important quotations from the text!

Mrs. Trombly: Mrs. Trombly’s math class is having a mid chapter quiz on Friday. We will be finishing up topic four by next Friday. Next Thursday will be our I ready diagnostic. More information will go home soon

Mr. Yanoff: Hi Red and Yellow Teams.  I want to congratulate those students who are trying hard and completing their assignments.  To the others you have only a few weeks before progress reports!  We are continuing our blistering pace, working on I-Ready.  Students know to immediately start this program when entering class and doing the homework assignments.  I want to thank the students for their leadership skills when we are in breakout rooms.  Now if we could only get the class participation up!

Mrs. MacKinnon: Hello 7th grade families this week will be a shortened and different type of schedule.  Monday will be no school to honor Dr. Martin Luther King.  Tuesday January 19th the kids will be having Iready testing for ELA in their homerooms.  This will be done in the morning from 9-11 and then in the afternoon as well. GRADE 5:

Ms. MacDonald: In science this week we will continue to learn about matter! The kids have been learning that everything is made up of matter, even things that we cannot see! Students conducted a lab last week to investigate this! Next week, we will continue to learn about matter!

In social studies, we have moved on to learn about the colonization of New England! Students will discuss the differences between Puritans and Pilgrims and the relationship these groups had with Native Americans who already lived in America.

Please continue to look over our daily assignment checklist each day in the stream section of all their core Google Classroom pages. This will help to make sure they are completing their work each day!

Ms. Duquette: We have been continuing our reading of the novel, Hatchet.  Students are doing a great job with our class discussions about the reading and seem to be enjoying the book.  I am so impressed by the level of deep thinking and text analysis that is going on with these fifth graders.  We continue to add new words to our vocabulary and try to use them in our speaking and writing.  Students have already had two quizzes on the novel, so ask them how they did.

Students have also shown improvement in their grammar analysis skills as we do daily grammar reviews together to build our understanding of how words are used, and sentences are structured.  We are also continuing our work on building our written content and writing stamina through our weekly journal writing assignments.

Ms. Spadaro: This week, students found common denominators and wrote equivalent fractions. Next week, students will use common denominators and equivalent fractions to add and subtract fractions.

Last week, students started using Reflex Math to practice math fact fluency. All students have their “secret code” to login and can access a tutorial on how to log in on Google Classroom. Students will have access to Reflex Math in class, but they can also access this program outside of class for extra practice or for fun!

GRADE 6:

Ms. Consolazio: In social studies class, we are finishing chapter 3 lesson 1 about Planet Earth.  There will be a lesson 1 review that students will answer questions about the chapter and turn in for classwork credit.  We will move on to chapter 3 lesson 2 next week.   Learning about a changing Earth.   Reminder, to access the textbook please go into ClassLink.  The textbook is red and labeled McGraw Hill.

In science class, we will continue learning about different waves.  Some examples are ocean waves, sound waves, and electromagnetic waves.  There will be a quiz on the first section of waves next week.

Mrs. Simes: In math, students are working within Topic 3 and with the rules, Order of Operations or PEMDAS.  They will continue to move forward throughout Topic 3 and use the idea that when they apply properties to operations to an expression, it will always result in an expression that is equivalent to the original. Just a reminder, all students should be accessing their i-Ready individualized paths on Monday and Thursday during Success Block.  This coming Thursday, January 21st, students will complete their Winter Diagnostic with their homeroom.

In science, students continue to wonder about the phenomena of “What is the

relationship between the amplitude and energy of waves?”  They will be learning how calculate the wavelength, frequency, and velocity of waves.  After school help continues on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 2:45 p.m. to 3:15. p.m.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at michele.simes@haverhill-ps.org.  Have a great weekend.

Some authors we will be reading include: Bao Phi, Katie Smith-Milway and Luis J. Rodriguez. Please remember that attendance and participation are key to ensure the academic success of all students.

GRADE 7:

Ms. Marciano: ELA: We are completing our essay on A Christmas Carol. Students focused on the lessons that Scrooge learned from each spirit and had to support those lessons with evidence from the text. We will be moving into our Poetry Unit next!

Science: We have started Unit 6: Ecosystem Biodiversity. This will be our last unit discussing ecosystems. Students will learn how ecosystems remain healthy and learn about the different interactions of the population in an ecosystem. Students will also learn what we can do, as human beings, to make sure we are treating the environment responsibly.

Mr. LeGrand: Math:  Students will learn how to solve simple interest problems and solve markup and markdown problems.  Please encourage your student to complete all their assignments on time, and to make up any missing assignments and remind your student to spend a minimum of 45 minutes per week working on i-Ready.

GRADE 8:

Mr. Harris: Math – We have been working on slope, with a quiz coming up at the end of this week!  Next week we will begin to analyze linear equations, looking at them in the form y = mx

Science – We have completed our unit on Predicting the Weather, and have taken time to really look at what makes for good CER writing (Claim, Evidence, Response).  Students have been working on fun CERs (one based on an old Audi commercial about a dad being an alien, another about the best musical artist of the last decade) in order to get comfortable with the writing process.  We will be having our CER on Predicting Weather – which is the test – in the next few days.

Mr. Marinella: ELA– As often as I can, I try to use this class to discuss modern and topical things. With MLK day coming up, we have been focusing on the man behind that day off. As a class, we are exploring 3 questions; Who was Martine Luther King Jr.? What did he believe in? And did that dream come true? We will be reading speeches and biographies, primary and secondary sources in order to better understand why Monday is much more than just a day we get to sleep in!

Civics– Civics is still working on understanding our Bill of Rights! We have examined and translated the rights and have begun to look at different cases and circumstances involving those first ten amendments. We will also start a project meant to deepen our historical and modern understanding of our rights and how they have evolved!

Ms. Blanchette: In the Remote Learning Academy middle school students have been engaged in learning grade level curriculum this week. Classes will not be held on Monday as it is Martin Luther King Day. Next Tuesday(1/19) and Thursday(1/21) students in grades 7 and 8 will be completing the iReady diagnostic test for math and ELA. It is imperative that students attend their homeroom google meet on time those days so they can listen for directions and are able to start the assessment on time. Please reach out with any questions or concerns. As always check my google classroom page for extra help times and other important information. Have a great week!
