Principal’s Weekly Update (12/6-12/10)

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL & MAIN OFFICE NEWS

DECEMBER NEWS: JGW is excited to announce Star Poet Society winners for the month of November during our monthly assembly coming up on December 8th. November winners have been selected based on the theme of generosity. For the month of December, the school theme will be responsibility. Being responsible means being dependable, making good choices, and taking accountability for your own actions. Responsible students succeed in school by working hard on their assignments. Responsible students do their share of the work when working in a group. Responsible students ask their teachers for help when they need it. Responsible students understand that we all have a part to play in making our school a better place. The JGW Star Poet Society hopes to award many winners in the month of December based on this theme.

MASKS: As we continue to adhere to the Massachusetts’s State Mandate that all people (students, staff, visitors) are required to wear a mask in the school building, we ask that you please send your student’s to school with a spare mask. Many students have been breaking their masks and need new one’s throughout the school day. We would appreciate families sending students with an extra mask each day. Thank you!

Chromebooks: PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR STUDENT IS COMING TO SCHOOL DAILY WITH THEIR CHROMEBOOKS FULLY CHARGED. THANK YOU!!

 JGW Chromebook Policy

We understand that “things happen” and from time-to-time students will forget to charge their Chromebook or leave it at home.  Unfortunately, this is becoming a habit for some students and is happening far too often overall.  Students were made aware at the beginning of the school year that the expectation is for ALL students to bring their fully-charged Chromebook to school each day.

The supply of extra Chromebooks is limited.  Because of this, we are implementing a borrowing policy here at JGW for Chromebooks and chargers.  Students who forget their Chromebooks, bring them to school uncharged, or do not return a borrowed Chromebook the same day will be given consequences as follows:

First Offense: Student will be issued a warning

Second Offense: Parents/Guardians will be called

Third Offense or More:  Student will be given after-school detention

**These consequences will reset for all students each trimester.

If a student loses or damages a Chromebook or charger and  the student needs to be issued another device, the family will be charged a fee for the replacement.  Typically, the Chromebook replacement fee will be $199.00 and the charger replacement fee will be $39.00.

It is very important for students to come to school with charged and functioning Chromebooks.  The devices are used in most, if not all classes; including music and art.  We are asking families to be partners with the JGW in this, and remind your children to charge their Chromebooks and bring them to school every day.

Attendance: A reminder to all families that if your student will be absent for the day, please make sure to call the main office (978-374-5782) to notify the school. Thank you.

Dress Code: We receive many questions about our school’s dress code. We would ask that all families please review the Haverhill Public Schools Dress Code Policy with their students in order to ensure that it is properly being followed. Thank you for your attention to this. Please find a copy of the HPS Dress Code Policy below: Dress Code Policy (HPS)

CLASSROOM NEWS:

GRADE 5:

Ms. Simes: Grade 5 Math/Science (Blue/Purple Group) In math, students are doing a great job developing understanding of multiplying decimals using decimal grids, partial products with the area model, and properties.  They continue to use their knowledge of place value and rounding to estimate the product and will complete their Topic 4 assessment this week. In science, students continue to make and record observations of their compost column, we are in Week 5. They also have begun to collaborate in focus groups to solve a problem using the Engineering Design Process. Additionally, they will complete a quiz of their last scope of this unit, “Matter and Energy Flow in An Ecosystem.”  Finally, we will begin our second unit, “Matter and Its Interactions.”  After school help will be Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday this week from 2:45 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at michele.simes@haverhill-ps.org.

Ms. Marciano: ELA: The 5th graders have been thoroughly enjoying the nonfiction narrative “Thirty Minutes Over Oregon”. We have been discussing what it means to reconcile with someone and how it can help someone through tough times. Next week, we will be moving into another nonfiction text and working on our citing text evidence skills.

SS: We have finished discussing the trials and tribulations of the Jamestown colony. We are now moving into the competition among European nations and how each nation had different approaches to colonizing America.

Ms. Hogan: This week in social studies, we started to learn about the 13 original colonies. We made a map of the colonies and we learned about what life was like in the New England colonies during the 1600s. Towards the end of the week, we had fun creating our own settlements. We learned about how it must have been challenging to come up with rules for a completely new settlement. Next week, we will start to discuss the Middle Colonies. These colonies include New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

Ms. LaCoste: This week in 5th grade ELA students (in red, orange, yellow, and green groups) have been hard at work.  We’ve continued with our small reading groups which has given the students a chance to read independently, read aloud to the group (if they choose to), and to discuss the book in small group discussions.  We also completed our short novel, The Poet’s Dog and wrote a response about whether or not we agreed that the book was poignant.  We’ve talked a lot about this word- ask your student about it!  In writing, we’ve begun our opinion/persuasive study, which will culminate with the students writing an essay to convince others to agree with their opinion on a given topic.  Important reminders:  Please try to send a water bottle to school with your child.  We have a limited number of cups for students to fill and we’ve had countless spills and messes to clean up as a result.  Also, charge those chromebooks and bring them to school every day!

Ms. Consolazio: In science, we will be finishing our scope on Matter Cycles.  Monday students will have a quiz on the material they learned.  Our next unit will be interactions with matter.

Please donate 2-liter bottles if possible. We will be using them next month to make water filters. Also, please make sure students bring their Chromebooks charged every day.

Mr. Kelly: We have finished multiplying with decimals. We will now go into dividing with whole numbers until holiday break. Every week, there will be homework that will be due on Friday. A reminder, please have students bring pencils with them to school.

Ms. Lees: The Fifth grade Orange and Green Groups are working hard in their reading groups – building Reading is Thinking strategies – Summarizing, Connecting, Visualizing, Inferring, Predicting, and Questioning. In Math students have finished the unit on multiplication of decimals and will begin division. Those students with individual goals continue working towards achievement. Students who have LEXIA accounts are encouraged to work at home with their reading online as well as to read everyday out loud with someone at home or to themselves. It will help all students to log into iReady for reading or math to strengthen their skills. Please reach out if after school or before school help will support your student.

Ms. Blanchette: Trimester 2 has begun! Please remind your students to come to class prepared and to complete assignments in a timely manner so they don’t build up. I have extra help weekly to support students with their work completion. If you have any questions please reach out to me. Have a great week!

GRADE 6:

Ms. Hamel: SS: Students have moved into “Life in Ancient Egypt.” This week we learned about the importance of the Nile River for Early Egyptian people. Students made posters with their names written in Hieroglyphics and will be exploring ancient tombs and burial practices used by these innovative people. Next we move into the Kingdom of Kush and the Nubian people.

ELA: This week we explored poetry and figurative language. Students are focusing on how figurative language can enhance text for a reader while also creating a picture in the reader’s head for stronger comprehension. We are also continuing to read through Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief.  As we wrap up this chapter book, we will be watching the movie to compare and contrast the book and the movie. Students will also be working on posters to draw a scene from the book.

We only have two and a half weeks before our winter break and I am proud of  the perseverance of our students through their academics. The Holiday Season is a Wonderful Time to Reflect on our own Lives and Seek Out Ways to Make Life Better for Those Around Us!

Ms. Silveira: Next week in science we will be experimenting with different ingredients to see what produces endothermic reactions and what produces exothermic reactions.

In math this week, we have located points on a coordinate plane. Next week, we will be figuring out the distances between those points.

We are in a new trimester so please check School Brains weekly for your child’s grades, so we can be on top of any missing assignments! If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me.
