Spelling Bee: Congratulations to our school spelling bee winners! In third place was fifth grader Carmen A., in second place was Amaiez A. from grade 5, and in first place was Jhalia A. from the 6th grade. It’s worth pointing out that our top two winners are siblings!  The spellers actually completed the studied spelling list and had to go onto an unstudied list provided by the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary.  We are so proud of all the spellers who participated– everyone did a fantastic job!  The championship word was “inkling,” by the way! Our champ will be working toward attending the regional championship, so stay tuned for an update!

FEBRUARY NEWS: For the month of February, the school theme has been empathy. Empathy is important for so many reasons. Empathy helps us understand how others are feeling so that we can respond appropriately to a situation. Empathy is important for creating strong relationships with others. Empathy helps us to be more supportive. Star Poet Society winners for the month of February will be selected based on this theme.

Chromebooks: PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR STUDENT IS COMING TO SCHOOL DAILY WITH THEIR CHROMEBOOKS FULLY CHARGED. THANK YOU!!

JGW Chromebook Policy

We understand that “things happen” and from time-to-time students will forget to charge their Chromebook or leave it at home.  Unfortunately, this is becoming a habit for some students and is happening far too often overall.  Students were made aware at the beginning of the school year that the expectation is for ALL students to bring their fully-charged Chromebook to school each day.

The supply of extra Chromebooks is limited.  Because of this, we are implementing a borrowing policy here at JGW for Chromebooks and chargers.  Students who forget their Chromebooks, bring them to school uncharged, or do not return a borrowed Chromebook the same day will be given consequences as follows:

First Offense: Student will be issued a warning

Second Offense: Parents/Guardians will be called

Third Offense or More:  Student will be given after-school detention

**These consequences will reset for all students each trimester.

If a student loses or damages a Chromebook or charger and  the student needs to be issued another device, the family will be charged a fee for the replacement.  Typically, the Chromebook replacement fee will be $199.00 and the charger replacement fee will be $39.00.

It is very important for students to come to school with charged and functioning Chromebooks.  The devices are used in most, if not all classes; including music and art.  We are asking families to be partners with the JGW in this, and remind your children to charge their Chromebooks and bring them to school every day.

Attendance: A reminder to all families that if your student will be absent for the day, please make sure to call the main office (978-374-5782) to notify the school. Thank you.

Dress Code: Please be aware that students are not allowed to wear pajamas or pajama pants to school. We receive many questions about our school’s dress code. We would ask that all families please review the Haverhill Public Schools Dress Code Policy with their students in order to ensure that it is properly being followed. Thank you for your attention to this. Please find a copy of the HPS Dress Code Policy below: Dress Code Policy (HPS)

Ms. Marciano: ELA: We are finishing up our essays on theme and using Writing with Colors to highlight our introductions, evidence, explanations, and conclusions. We will be moving into drama next!

SS: We just finished learning about the differences between Patriots and Loyalists. We had some great discussions this week about whether or not Britain was justified in sending their troops to Boston during colonial protests. Next week, we will be learning about the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party.

Ms. Hogan: This week in social studies, we discussed Paul Revere, the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the Second Continental Congress, and the Battle of Bunker Hill. Next week, we will learn about the Declaration of Independence. We will analyze the document and discuss where the ideas for the Declaration of Independence came from. On Thursday 2/17, we will be having a short quiz about the beginnings of the American Revolution.

Ms. LaCoste: Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the spelling bee.  A special shout out to Armaiez and Carmen from orange group who placed in the top 3! This week, students completed their personal narratives, using a criteria grade sheet to edit and check their work. We will now put the two skills together for the next two weeks. The students will be working on adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators. The unit will end the week after February Break where they will have a test that week. As a reminder, there is no homework every week that is due on Friday. The homework is important because it helps to reinforce the skills taught in class.

Ms. Lees: Students in Fifth grade Orange and Green Groups continue working towards understanding fractions. They have completed their personal narratives and shortly will expand their writing to informational pieces while continuing to become more skillful in editing. Book groups are writing and explaining their understanding of the text. Those students with individual goals continue working towards achievement. Students who have LEXIA accounts are encouraged to work at home with their reading online as well as to read every day out loud with someone at home or to themselves. As one student said, “if the world ran out of something we love, or someone we love leaves our world, we are forever changed in a sad way.” SO TRUE!! Strong Conversations are certainly the best part of my day as a teacher.

Mr. Marinella: ELA– Blue and Purple English has started a new novel that we are going to be reading and dissecting; The Call of the Wild. This story is about a dog named Buck who experiences hardships at the hands of his masters and must ultimately find freedom in the Yukon. While men fight and search for gold, Buck will be fighting and searching for his true identity, one that is tied to his wild ancestry. This book is overcoming hardship, connecting with your past, and becoming who you truly are.

Civics– Civics has taken a brief break from our year-long Civics Project to get back into our curriculum. We have been focusing on understanding the Legislative Branch. The Founding Fathers put this branch in Article I of the Constitution to show its importance, yet many people do not understand its most basic responsibilities or powers. Our job, in room 15, is to learn why we have this branch, who is a member of it, and what these people do. Ms. MacKinnon: We have finished our unit on physical vs. chemical properties.  The students are now moving onto our last unit on the conservation of mass.  Students wil  use a model to explain that atoms are rearranged during a chemical reaction to form new substances with new properties.  They will also explain that the atoms present in the reactants are all present in the products and thus the total number of atoms is conserved.

Ms. Senior: Frederick Douglass’s riveting autobiography is being read by 8th grade ELA students and they are working on composing response-to-text essays in which they must provide evidence to support thesis statements. Mathematics students had been working with two-way frequency tables and they’re now moving on to Systems of Equations.
